I saw them in the theaters too. As to the first one, my cousin had seen it and talked me into going while I was back on Thanksgiving break from my freshman year at college. So far, I've been pretty successful in avoiding the 'feeling old' thing, because I tend not to live or act that way. When I see some of these facts that 'such and such' happened 'X ago', it just makes think, gee, doesn't seem like it was that long ago. The only chink in the armor started at my 25th High School reunion last year when I realized some of my classmates where now grandparents. Ouch. Other than that, the Peter Pan attitude marches on.
I happened to pull out the Velvet Underground reunion CD yesterday and realized its already 18 years old.
That wasn't me . But I do remember seeing them on VHS. And one time I brought over my dvd copies of the movies and my younger cousin thought that the movies were old. I said yes they were, and that I remember seeing them on VHS and that I'll kick his behind for saying that .
You sound like my wife, who is 46. I'm 51, but she puts up with my music practicing and listening. I was super excited about the Pink Floyd remasters recently released. Then I realized their last studio album was in 1994, the year my wife and I married, 17 years ago, LOL! The new Paul Simon compilation looked really good to me. The oldest songs are from 1972. Oops....
- Next year, TNG will be the same age TOS was when Star Trek VI came out. - When Transformers: The Movie came out, I thought that 2005 was far off in the distant future. Can't believe 2005 was 6 years ago. - The Spice Girls also got a lifetime achievement award a few years back. - The future from Kight Rider 2000 was almost 12 years ago. - 2010, the year we make contact, has come and gone. - Burton's Batman movie is as old as Adam West's Batman series was in 1989. - The seaQuest DSV will be roaming the oceans in 3 years.
If they were still alive, John Lennon would be 70 and Presley would be 76. Johnny Carson died 6 years ago. If he was still alive, he'd be 86. Metallica was formed 30 years ago. The Rolling Stones formed 49 years ago. Candace Cameron Bure played the kid, Dj, on Full House. She turned 35 this year. My idiot roommate used to watch that in my old apt. It wasn't even my first apt.
- If Enterprise were still on, the Romulan War would have come and gone, and the Federation would be in place. - In just under a year, Firefly will be a decade old. - Time-wise, the release of Star Trek Generations is closer to the release of The Motion Picture than it is to today.
I am so old that I managed to see all of the lost Dr Who episodes twice before they were lost. I am so old that I managed to see AC/DC perform when Bon Scott was still alive.
I'm only 31, and I'm not old, but I feel that way. I think part of it's due to the fact that as we age, time seems to compress, and that modern society as a whole is moving faster in terms of perception and in terms of innovation. We're seeing so many more things, much of it due to the internet and it's ability to bring the latest everything to us mere moments after they happen, or even as they happen. We're inundated by music, movies, television shows, news events, everything all at once, and those who are outside the reach of the internet (which are very few) still notice that things are moving forward rapidly. It makes me think of the 1930s to the 1950s, where technology made leaps and bounds, and world events were placed right on our doorstep. Now, it doesn't help me, because I read a lot, and my favorite subject is often early turn of the (20th) century history. That's another thing. Now when I have to say "turn of the century" in recent historical context, I have to reference the 20th century specifically. Anyway, I'm drifting off my point. What it is, is that I love the cultural flavor of the early 1900s all the way up to now, and so I use words people haven't used in a hundred years. I'm like the Bing Crosby of my day. As I'm sure many of you know, the man was a veritable fountain of colloquialisms that simply did not have an original owner, but he mashed them together and they worked. As I said, I'm not old. 31 is still considered young (for now), but I can't help thinking about all the intervening years, and that does pull at my soul a bit. My mother used to tell me I was an old soul, that I was far too mature for someone my age (at the time I first recall her telling me, it was when I was 6 and reading a science book while my cousins played in the dirt in our front yard). She said I used to talk about old ideas like they were current, and she's right. I've always felt much older than my years, but not in a negative way, just that I feel like I've lived a dozen lifetimes. Who knows. Anyway, the popular media really can make you feel old. Most things are geared for the 15-25 year old demographic, and you start getting edged out once you pass that point. I didn't feel different at 16, 18, 21, or 25, but at 30, something clicked and I felt very different, like I missed something somewhere along the way, something that can't be recaptured. Well, I'm rambling now, like an old fella.
I saw Jimmy "JJ" Walker perform on tv last night. He's grey-haired, heavyset and all wrinkly. Gah. He's only a few years older than me. I watched Good Times as a kid and had a shirt that said : Dy NO MITE! on it in 3rd grade....
"Transformers: The Movie (released in 1986) was set in 2005 and that seemed like "Whoa, the future!". Now it's...6 years in the past.
It was also a really bad movie with awful animation. I have lived so long as to see the absolute impossible. Kermit the Frog Loves Miss Piggy and they are in a committed relationship. This is how you reward nearly 40 years of constant attempted rape attempts. Surrender.
I was doing okay until you dropped that one on me. Goddammit they dropped the ball so badly with that one.
Chevy remained pretty much the same from 1975 until about 1995 and then he hit 'old man' mode practically overnight. Maybe it's because I've seen Fletch and Vacation about 1000 times each I have a specific look for him in my mind, but yikes! I had to look up his age on IMDB, and he is 2 years younger than my dad, but he now looks about 10 years older than my dad. Scary stuff. I think Ted Danson still looks good though.
