Q in the New Movie

They had their chance to incorporate Q into a TNG movie a decade ago, and they didn't.

He was a great villain, and DeLancie was great in the part. Despite the DS9 episode and the (mostly bad) Voyager arcs, I consider him part and parcel with TNG. I don't want to see Q on screen if it doesn't involve Picard, and those days are over.

Wouldn't mind seeing him pop up again in a Typhon Pact and post-Destiny era novel though, I do enjoy the character.

Wow, I'm surprised at all the hatred for Q around here. He was always one of my favorite characters when TNG was on the air and at the time was a very popular character. I know fans kept expecting him to turn up in one of the TNG movies and were perplexed at why they never included him, especially after doing a Borg film. I guess over the years people have changed their attitudes toward him.

Q wore out his welcome.. There's no need to bring him into yet another iteration of the Star Trek franchise. He was a regular baddie in TNG and then they brought him over to DS9 and then VOY. It's not hatred, it is the desire to see something new and fresh.

If the intention of the reboot was to make the Trek Universe more 'realistic' then I doubt he or any other 'supernatural/paranormal' device will ever appear on screen.

Er ... They resurrected Kirk and Co. ;) But I agree, it doesn't seem like hatred.

I doubt anyone has managed to make questionable quote marks work so hard. Heck, the entire universe was trying to get Kirk into the captain’s chair. Q would feel right at home I'm sure.

Too late (see above), but that's interesting. I always thought Q was just from an technologically advanced society (I don't like to mix my Trek with fantasy). But didn't they refer to Q's abilities as "powers"? That has more of a magic feel to it. Of course as Arthur C Clarke said ... .

Eh. They may have resurrected Kirk and company, but we only got three years and six films of them, versus 21 seasons and four TNG era films. There is still fresh material for Kirk and Spock. Not so much for TNG. They pretty much did all the did and it's done!!

It might be interesting to see how Kirk deals with a genuine God... One that can't be fooled with ridiculous paradoxes and has no power source to destroy.

Roughly the same as Enterprise (hours-wise) and I don't recall TNG having 21 seasons. Ie. it's not TOS against the rest, however sympathetic I might personally be to that point of view. While TOS is my favourite Trek, there is no denying its old. Any freshness in STXI was mostly superficial and stylistic. I hope they can go on to make something both fresh and worthwhile, but it’s just an assumption that Q or TNG have been mined out. An understandable one in Q's case as it must be hard to write for that kind of character. Then again who knows what JJ+ would do with a TNG or DS9 "reboot"/movie (heaven forbid!).

Hmmm. There goes that idea that Q is a "God" again. Granted, it’s hard to see a destination. But yes, a Q movie might get the writers thinking a bit more. :)

Perhaps "entity" would work better. But, nonetheless, compared to other such beings which have fallen for Captain Kirk's tricks, Q is in an entirely different class.

It would be interesting, though, if J.J. Abrams and co. decided to use something iconic from TNG in their next film whether of not it was Q. Considering he linked events from TNG (mainly Spock being on Romulus), it's conceivable that they could draw from the mythology established on that series or one of the spin-offs. Q would be logical because it's believable that he would have been around during Kirk's time in the center seat. Regardless, why would the new film have to rely only on TOS for its inspiration?

Because TOS is better known to the general public at large. We had seven years of TNG, DS9, and VOY, but ask some random person on the street if they know anything about Star Trek and it's Kirk, Spock, Beam Me Up Scotty. Any attempt to bring in elements from TOS for the sake of satisfying a particular niche in fandom would seem like a bit of pandering. Frankly I don't see the point of it, nor do I think it would be kewl. I say this as a fan of all the series and movies.

I'm betting the Borg show up at some point and I'm not necessarily against it.

Picard never "beats" Q either, at least not directly. Q chooses to leave at the end of the story. You can humiliate or placate him into leaving, though, that's what Picard does. It's what Kirk would likely be good at doing too, if he were to encounter Q in a story.

IF they get Q, use Delance, an Omnipotent being should have no problem tranversing universes, as well as life and death.
