David (Harry Potter) Yates to direct Doctor Who The Movie!

My only worry would be if Yates came along and made a blockbuster with a completely different take on the character and format I didn't like, and BBC Wales decided to drop their current production to make something based on the movie.

That's what I'd be afraid of. Especially if it's a big moneymaker, telling BBC Wales to make the show more like the movie (assuming the show continues at all). After all, why have the silly old tv show when it's clearly the movies people want to see?

I don't think anyone at the BBC thinks a movie will impinge on the TV show in any shape or form. It's just another way of hopefully making some money. I don't know why anyone else thinks it will impinge on the TV show either. It's not like the movie will take any of the budget away from DW.

I can only assume that it must be left over paranoia from the days of the Original Series when the BBC did treat the show like shot, as opposed to now when it's one of their biggest and most valued brands Worldwide.

Also talk to any classic BSG or Trek fan about being tossed aside because the studio came up with a shiny new 'remake'.

Um. Question: did I read somewhere we're getting less episodes next year? And this movie's going to be made?

Related issues? YOU DECIDE!

There's a full 13 episodes being made next year, but it's not yet been decided whether to show them all in 2012, or split the season around Xmas - in which case there'd be something like 19 or 20 episodes in the anniversary year (13 + the second half of season 7)

So, no, nothing to do with it

BSG had been dead for decades when it was remade and Trek was also dead when JJ came along. Hardly the same.

I was going to say something similar but couldn't be arsed. Also, was BSG made into a movie? Did that movie sink the TV show?

Wonder who they get to play the doctor,be a amercian playin hin with a fake english accent i reckon.

Just like all those actors in the Harry Potter films, half of which were directed by Yates?

Oh wait...

Exactly, Harry Potter is probably the best example out there of a well known British creation being kept completely British on transfer to the big screen. I can't see Yates having any issues doing that again.

And someone up thread mentioned Emma Watson - I think she may be a very obvious choice for companion. She'd be the perfect age, and a big name to draw in the audience. Carey Mulligan would be too, but has history with the franchise and I suspect they'd go with someone completely new.

Because Doctor Who is one of the BBC's most popular fictional outputs? It doesn't help the BBC at all if their programme gets ditched for big movies, because they still have to fill their schedules. And the BBC aren't a for-profit venture, either, remember. Who is made from the licence fee. The movie - totally different ball game.

But this looks like a big project if it actually (ever) materializes, and snubbing your nose at the series and crew that have made the franchise a phenomenon seems a bit ... thoughtless.

That'd be RTD and Eccleston/Piper/Tennant...

Moffat has just about managed to keep it at the same level of success as they built it up to from nothing, as well as jumping on the coat-tails of BBC America's push to make the show bigger in the States.

And Moffat had no part in that? He didn't write episodes that were considered high points during the RTD era, didn't win then show Hugos, didn't take over when not only RTD but the incrediblty popular David somebody or other left and maintained the show's level of success?

You really won't give the guy any credit at all will you?

Anyway, I still think this is an ill thought out idea, but benefit of the doubt and all that so we'll see, and I sincerely hope I don't end up saying I told you so.

Series 7 is being broadcast in late 2012 (first half) and early 2013 (second half). The reason they're doing it is (presumably) so they can concentrate an entire series' budget into the Super Special Awesome 50th Anniversary Event, due to be broadcast in late 2013.

Has that been officially confirmed? Or, are you just reporting rumor? I suspect the latter.

Mr Awe

We know that Season 7 has to be broadcast in late 2012; filming doesn't begin until February.

What's not clear is how many of the 13 episodes they're making will be shown in 2012. It's possible it could have a Merlin-like run of 13 episodes from October to Christmas. Or they could show 6 (or 7) in the autumn and hold the rest back until early 2013.

Well since you asked, nope didn't feel tossed aside at all.

In fact if you pay attention the Star Trek fans that feel the way you think we all do are in fact THE MINORITY!

No. The nuBSG series had finished its natural run and then, some months later, it was announced that Bryan Singer was going to direct an entirely different movie, based on the original series. There is and was no connection between the Ron D Moore series ending - Moore had said some time earlier that it would run for 5 seasons and so it did - and the still-in-development movie.

I hardly think that people who are running around screaming because someone wants to make a Doctor Who movie are in the majority.
