Edit: Incidentally, David Brin had an excellent blog about young adult literature: "What books can we give our teens that don't mire them in a swamp of vampires, domineering wizards or nostalgia for feudalism? These are a few of my personal science fiction favorites for young adults, weighted more toward SF and a little common sense mixed with lots of sense-o-wonder. Many are classics that I grew up with...along with some marvelous recent additions." We don't have to keep feeding kids stuff that looks toward a supposed "golden age" of the past.

Interesting. While I admire Brin's enthusiasm for Sci-Fi over Fantasy (even if I don't necessarily agree), many of his recommendations aren't "Young Adult" (or "Teen" as some prefer) books. And while I applaud his recommendations of Scott Westerfeld, Tamora Pierce, Suzanne Collins, Lois Lowry, and others, much of his post reads like a list of "great sci-fi books that Young Adults can read and appreciate" rather than a list of "great sci-fi books written for Young Adults." It's a small, but significant distinction.

Are people pro or con on the new Harry / Voldemort fight? On the one hand it's unrealistic that Harry would last five seconds in a fair fight... on the other hand it's damn cool looking and a dramatically satisfying way to end the series... I like it. (with reservations!)

It was at least consistant with the other movies in that Harry won through sheer luck and circumstance.

Harry's mom and dad have a much bigger part in it, well their ghosts anyway ... Lupin wasn't part of that scene in the book. In short, since only Harry can see them, Voldy can't. The mom and dad grab Voldy's arms and hold him down while Harry does this weird sort of dancing curse that ends up turning Voldy into an insect - a fly, I think it was? - and then steps on it, and that's how Voldy died in the book.

I think JKR was a little loopy when she wrote it.

He's messing with you. There was actually less of a fight in the books. JKR turned Harry into a witty badass kind of in the vein of Spider-Man who talked Voldemort down and then killed him the same way they did in the film. The scene with his parents and what not went pretty much exactly how the movie presented it. And yes, Lupin was there.

I picked up the 3D-bluray yesterday, which led me to start the "Flickster crap” thread. I understand the piracy angle, though manufacturing in China probably led to more bootlegs than anything else, imo. But, if the other seven movies were actual downloads, why couldn’t this last film be actual download. I can’t put it on my ipad. I planned on watching it on the plane. Dang!

I haven't really explored it yet, but according to the instruction page "you can instantly stream to computers, tablets, or smartpones anytime, anywhere and also download to your computer." Is the download in a non-iPad compatible format?

I did find the instructions for download. It involves downloading Flixster app onto the ipad and then downloading the movie. I’ve done that, but haven’t tried to watch the movie on the ipad yet.

The movie seems to be accessed through the Flixster app. Is this correct? Can it be moved to itunes, do you know?

I watched it this afternoon. Still have the same opinion as after I saw it in the theater: it's my least favorite of the movies. I was disappointed, because a couple of the others grew on me second time 'round, and I was hoping that would happen again. Oh well. I prefer the books anyway.

See, this one actually grew on me a lot the second time around, so much so that I decided to watch it a third time. I thought it worked really well, especially watching it immediately after Part 1.

I thought the duel was visually striking, and moving it outdoors added to the impact. I just wish there had been witnesses to this momentous event as there were in the book, maybe more and more people coming out of the castle as the duel progressed until quite a number of spectators were there at the end.

Agreed.

I think it was important too for the wizarding community to see their bogeyman being killed.

yeah that final standoff should have been surrounded by all the students as in the book, agreed.

I'm trying to remember from the book, but Voldy couldn't Harry because he was the "master of death" by possessing the Hallows, right? But he cast away the Stone and did he have the Cloak at that point? Or is not literally he had them on him, but he possessed all three at one point without having them taken from him.

Also, I remember he doesn't destroy the Wand in the book, what does he do with it...?
