Is Sarek aware of Spock's personal life in this Film?

Is Sarek aware that Spock has a girlfriend? What classes Spock teaches? or what Spock’s hobbies are? I know Spock is Vulcan but like humans he clearly has other things that are of interest to him minus studying and mediating.

I mean, how is the Father-Son relationship in this film? I can’t imagine NuSpock telling NuSarek about his first ponfarr experience. NuSpock was obviously closer to his mum in this film (he probably told her).

When I read NuTrek fan-fictions, many writers always write stories of Amanda buying Spock cloths or taking him out for dinner or Spock calling her and asking her for advise.

While this is not in the film, it is likely that all this occurred before Amanda’s death.

Is it fair to say that NuSpock had no emotional connection to his dad...at least not until the end when Sarek finally said those important three words...I loved her

Spock and Sarek's estrangement pretty much unfolds as expected in the Star Trek universe. He chose StarFleet over the Vulcan Science Academy, so it is doubful that Sarek would know any care to know any detail about Spock, though I am sure he kept up with his StarFleet career because deep down he's still proud of Spock in that regard.

Vulcans have emotions, but control them. Spock is still half human and we do see him having some flings in the original show, so it's not unheard of to have NuSpock exploring this as well. Spock and Uhura had some light flirty moments sprinkled in the series, so it's not implausible that they had a thing during their academy days. Remember that the characters of this film are supposed to be younger versions of the characters we know. Hell the Original Spock was always shouting in his early TOS appearances, and Kirk and McCoy have been able to tap into Spock's aggro side. And not all Vulcans are monks, either. We've met a bunch of "atypical" Vulcans in all five series, and particularly Enterprise. It's kinda nice to see Kirk and Spock ten years before they became Kirk and Spock.

I'm sure Sarek kept close tabs on his son's progress despite their estrangement. Amanda certainly would have.

I would say Spock definitely had an emotional connection to both his parents. He simply didn't express it to his Vulcan father in the same way he did to his human mother, because Sarek wouldn't approve. An estrangement doesn't mean an emotional disconnect - far from it.

One of the things I really loved about the film is that, in the face of the disaster and tragedy of Amanda's death and Vulcan's destruction, Spock and Sarek's petty squabble was instantly forgotten. They pulled together and it was awesome.

Of course, someone, somewhere is gonna call it a plot hole

True but as if being a horny teenager isn't bad enough at times, the Vulcan puberty begins with a hyper-horny surge that could kll you.

Probably not because it seems that there was some enstrangement following Spock's decision to refuse acceptance into the Vulcan Science Academy (just like the prime verse).

Even if he did know that Spock was dating a human, he probably didn't have any issues with it, because if he did then he'd be a hypocrite and that's not logical.

I think they certainly did. As others have noted, their distance in their relationship doesn't mean Sarek didn't know what was going on in Spock's life. I'm sure Amanda probably mention some things. Whether or not Sarek knew about Uhura, I doubt it. I doubt he asked Sarek for advice about how to deal with a human female although you would think that would be best person to ask. Perhaps he mentioned it to Amanda since she is human and married to a full-blooded Vulcan.

I do wonder if Spock had trouble dealing with the fact that he is following in his father's footsteps in a way by being involved with a human.

I think it's clear in the movie especially after Amanda's death that Spock's and Sarek's relationship is going to improve, taking a different direction then the original series and the first set of movies seem to indicate. Sarek's and Spock's relationship is one of the subplots I've always found interesting.

If Sarek isn't aware of the relationship when the Vulcans are first beamed aboard the Enterprise, he is aware of it by the time Spock relieves himself from duty. Sarek watches them both from the background while on the bridge, and gives Uhura a significant look before going after Spock.

In the scene between Sarek and Spock in the transporter room (which mirrors the scene between them after Spock's fight with the bullies) Sarek not only tells Spock that he loved his mother (and Spock), but implicitly gives Spock permission to not to be "fully Vulcan" and hide his feelings: "You will always be a child of two worlds. I am grateful for this, and for you." Spock is freed from trying to be more Vulcan than Vulcans in this universe, and is now free to express his feelings openly to Uhura (as he did on the transporter pad, and when he was giving his last message for her to Kirk). . .

I have to say that I felt they did Spock's and Sarek's relationship perfectly and in full accord with what's been previously shown. Everyone knows that Sarek loved Amanda, that was shown beginning with Journey to Babel.

I only wish that they would have chosen an actor who had more presence than Ben Cross. From one angle he resembles Mark Lenard, but generally looking at him I didn't feel that I was seeing a legendary man full of willpower, charisma and genius-level intellect.

I was on another Trek forum when the movie came out and there was a guy who was obsessed that Sylvester Stallone should be cast to play Sarek!!!


I do see your point though. Mark Lenard had an imposing presence and Ben Cross didn't seem to have that quality.

When Mark Lenard was on screen, you felt as if you were in the presence of a superior man. I just didn't get that with Cross. It really is unfortunate.
