Predictions for XII

I have a hunch about several things that will happen in the movie. Nothing concrete really, but these are things I predict will happen:

- The movie will be set not long after ST09, at least developmentally. They might say the number of years is however many elapsed in real time, but not much will have changed. It won't take place immediately after ST09.

- Because very little has changed, that will allow Kirk's character to undergo a little bit of duress in relation to his position. He won't just be accepted as Captain right away. There will be those who trust in him, but his mission in this movie will ultimately be to prove himself.

- Pike will serve in limited capacity in this movie. As his role was to prod Kirk into action in the first movie, he will probably only serve as a moderate guide here. He will probably deliver Kirk's orders for the upcoming mission, and we will see Kirk gaining more independence. Spock will likely take over the role of guidance though, despite not being a superior.

- Aside from space, there will probably be three locales. One might be a new Vulcan colony to pay lip service to the first movie. This could be where the first battle begins. The others are tougher to tell, but it might involve an orbital outpost, and then the planet where the bulk of the confrontation takes place.

- The movie will likely start with some sort of Skirmish between the Enterprise and the race of the villain, possibly one that even threatens the security of the entire Federation in some way. This race could be anyone really, but Klingons may be strongly favored. The battle may end in stalemate, or as something like a Pyrrhic victory. Something that stimulates a little inkling of doubt over Kirk's command, and compels the villain to revenge. More doubt may come after the villain launches a partially successful revenge attack against Kirk. The audience will definitely feel a hint of frustration at this situation.

- Something will split the crew up, likely the aforementioned attack. Some may be confined to a shuttle or planet's surface while the others will remain on the ship. Kirk and Spock would definitely be part of the smaller, more isolated group. This will be their proving ground, and it may involve some sort of sacrifice to get back to their ship.

- The movie may not end in a concrete victory. Something will happen to shake things up for a possible third movie, perhaps including a cliffhanger or tease. This could mean the villain not dying or perhaps even winning in a way. It's unlikely that the studio would jive with this though. At the very least, Kirk will have proved himself, and the next movie would focus more on the masterful Kirk we know. This movie will likely be a little less standalone, and threads will continue into the third one.

I realize a lot of these are pretty vague, but that's kind of the point. The details (races, characters, planets, etc) are the part that is easily substituted. For instance, it doesn't really matter who the villain in this movie is, so long as he fits the conditions that the characters require.

I'd like to discuss any of these elements, but feel free to suggest any of your own plot elements that you think are likely to crop up as well.

My expectations are few.. They made their own universe with these characters. I would love to see how they play in it!!

The villain will be a klingon bent on destroying Earth with some kind of WMD. Kirk and the Enterprise will fight him. There'll be lots of shooting and explosions. Kirk and company will kill the villain and save the day. Roll credits.

I don't know if any of this will be right, wrong, or partially right, but here are my predictions:

There will be ramifications from ST XI.

47 Klingon battlecruisers were destroyed by Nero. Nero is a Romulan. The Klingons will wage war on the Romulans. Nero is rogue and not even from their time but the Klingons won't care. They'll want to stop the Romulans from ever becoming so powerful in the future. The Federation sides with the Romulans since the Klingons are the aggressors, and the Klingons turn on them too.

Would the backstory have to be covered in this much depth? No, but it does provide a context for the Klingons to become the antagonists and it stems out of the previous movie. [EDIT: Then again, this type of exposition could be covered in a briefing Pike gives to Kirk -- and now Pike serves a purpose in the film.]

Kirk proved himself as the person for the job, commanding the Enterprise in major crisis like an enemy threat from the future destroying Vulcan and threatening to destroy Earth. How will he do in the long term as a Captain? Was he promoted too fast? This is a natural conflict and Kirk would have to reaffirm that he is indeed the right choice to be captain.

Something will happen between Spock and Uhura. It would be too easy to have them be lovey, dovey "happily ever after."

47 Klingon battlecruisers were destroyed by Nero.

To split a hair or two, the exact reference in the movie is "... forty-seven Klingon Birds Of Prey...". Doesn't mean they were battlecruisers. If we go by the Bird Of Prey design seen in the movies (or the one in 'Enterprise'), they were a lot smaller than battlecruisers.

Of course, losing 47 of any kind of warship, all in one go, will certainly lead to ill-feeling.

I could definitely see the Klingons going to war against the Romulans and that being a crucial factor in the movie. It would be a bit stale to have yet another Romulan as the big bad, but a Klingon OTOH... That's an intriguing premise.

Let's assume that Benicio Del Toro (let's face it, it's very likely he'll be cast) plays a Klingon captain that has a run in with the Enterprise near the beginning of the movie. This run in could revolve around the Enterprise responding to a Romulan civilian transporters distress call (subtle nod to the Kobayashi Maru, but not the same) and BDT's ship intercepts and demands that the Enterprise lets him take his prisoners. Kirk, naturally refuses and employs a risky gamble that pays off and allows him to save the Romulan refugees and get away.

This would infuriate BTD and he would swear revenge on Kirk and the Federation for what he percieves as them "allying with the enemy". The Klingon Empire is in no condition to go to war against the Federation as well, so BTD makes it his personal mission to track down and defeat the Enterprise. This leads to him recruiting another ship and they set off to find Kirk. The other ship runs into the Enterprise in a star system and a battle ensues with the Klingons getting the upper hand but Kirk, Spock and McCoy ditch the ship and take a shuttle to the planet. Meanwhile, Scotty who is in command finds a way to give the Klingons the slip.

The Klingon captain and two of his officers beam down to the planet to track down Kirk. This is where the action scenes of the movie take place with McCoy being wounded and Kirk and Spock having to fight the Klingons outnumbered. They succeed and Scotty having repaired the Enterprise's damage reemerges and disables the Klingon ship, beaming the away team aboard and escaping.

Meanwhile, BDT has attacked a Romulan ship and acquired it's cloaking technology. He then sets off to find Kirk where an epic space battle ensues with the Klingons boarding the Enterprise as their ship is destroyed. Another hand to hand battle that ends with the Enterprise coming out victorious. BDT accepts defeat, but swears that every Klingon house will know Kirk's name.

The Klingons, having been forced to a stalemate with the Romulans retreat back into their space but the threat of war between the Federation and Klingon is still a major problem. Admiral Pike meets with the Klingon Ambassador to agree upon a Neutral Zone that neither Starfleet nor the KDF may cross and that to do so by either side would be considered an act of war. The movie ends with the revelation that the conflicts between the major powers of the alpha quadrant has enabled another major threat to go unnoticed. Spock claims that earlier he had detected an enormous amount of subspace activity, almost like an entire group of minds communicating with each other all at once - this of course hints that the Borg will be the main enemy in the sequel.

***

Hopefully the film will be hundreds of times better than this! I gave it a bash anyway and I'm thinking that there will be more of an "ensemble" focus to XII.

It will be enjoyable but silly fluff with tons of action, running around, and will feature a poorly motivated villain.

Oh, wait that was Star Trek XI.

Star Trek XII will have the Enterprise in it, yet there will STILL be no gay character in Trek.

And McCoy and Spock will argue more.

We all know that Spock and Sulu are gay and that Scotty and Keenser are a hot couple.
We will find out, however, that Uhura has a penis.

We'll find out that Nero was actually trying to destroy Federation planets in hopes of killing Harlan Ellison...

My predictions:

  • It'll continue to diverge further from the prime universe, yet will also include a few easter eggs from it as well.
  • The Kirk-Spock-Uhura triumverate will be finalized.
  • A bit more screentime for McCoy.
  • Scotty's reputation as a miracle worker will continue to grow.
  • Sulu and Chekov will both be involved in a major action sequence.
  • Kirk's quick ascendency as Captain of the Enterprise will be addressed.
  • It'll spark nearly two years of nerd rage on the internet--and it won't be mostly about canon this time.
  • It'll end on a cliff-hanger.

No disrespect, but those are pretty safe predictions. I also predict that parts of Trek XII will take place in space.

Kirk will wear a yellow shirt. Chekov will give McCoy a golden shower in exchange for saurian brandy and a prostate exam.

There will be flashbacks...possibly more Kirk backstory, but maybe some Spock backstory.

Spock and Uhura's relationship to be explored and tested...maybe a third party (T'Pring)

Spock and McCoy to develop their famous rapport.

I predict this. Lots of it.
