 What does that mean? I actually find these types of awards more interesting than Oscar and the like.

It means the Science, Engineering, and Technology Awards are now an obsolete body (at least, that's what I get from the "meh"), even though it rewards shows and movies that inspire people to pursue those paths in the first place -- for that matter, I remember people complaining that TOS inspired people to enter those fields but that somehow XI failed to do so. And yet this two year old film is being recognized for doing just that. Figures.

There's no pleasing certain people. There were those who whined incessantly about how dark and boring DS9 was. Those same people now think DS9 was the best of the franchise. There are those who love B5 and yet fail to recognize how derivative it was and how much the writing sucked goat smegma. There are those who think NuBSG is the second coming. No one is ever going to completely agree here. The fact that Trek XI two years out is still being recognized for some kind of high profile accolade speaks louder about the quality of the film than any comic book guy's pedantic whining.

In other words...

How is it obsolete? It's a new award...and tech and engineering are an ever-expanding part of the industry and life in general.

If the speculative technology exists--and ST09 only reinforced ST's own position as tech inspiration--then it will probably continue to inspire people.

Did anyone notice Ryan CHurch's production paintings for the new matter-antimatter engine--albeit unused--look as if they were inspired by CERN and Fermilab's particle accelerators? I like the synergy there.

Oh, just to be clear, *I* don't think it's obsolete at all, and I'm thrilled that the film is getting an award two years after its release. If Trek has a tradition of inspiring young people to enter the sciences, and this movie continues that tradition, then by all means that's a positive influence on the future.
