This drives me nuts because it isn't true. I spent years in Russia, and met many many Russians that speak English as a second language, and Koenig's accent was not off the mark. Neither is Yelchin's, for that matter - as there are many degrees of accent as well as influence of geography.
Where Yelchin was absolutely wrong was in criticizing Koenig's interposing of W and V (as in "Nuclear Wessels"). This is an extremely common mistake made by native Russians speaking English, in spite of there being a V sound in Russian.
Koenig may not be a native Russian, but he sure did his homework, and Yelchin could have been more respectful of his thespian elder rather than assuming he knew everything because of his heritage.
Chekovs accent is more realistic than in TOS.
