Once Upon a Time - gasp! a fantasy series that might last?

The second episode of Once Upon a Time aired on ABC last night (I'm surprised there was no discussion thread here). They're going in interesting directions with it. According to the overnights last night's episode did really well. It wasn't as high-rated as the Sunday Night Football-crushing pilot, but still pretty respectable behind football and 60 Minutes.

Jury is still out on Grimm since it hasn't had its second episode yet, but it would be nice to see a full-out fantasy series (as opposed to SF or Lost-style SF hybrid) do well for a change on a network that isn't on cable. I get the feeling "Your move" has a chance of becoming a catch phrase, too...

At this point, I'm more likely to stick with Grimm than Once Upon A Time. While I haven't finished the second episode, I'm already getting annoyed at the smug little kid, the Desperate Housewives tone in the real world, and what I imagine is the Twilight like dialogue in the fairytale world.

(I'm surprised there was no discussion thread here).

Temis had a discussion thread for the pilot, Here; http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=149539&page=6 And it is only on the second page. As to why there isn't a review thread for the second ep? I blame Temis. :p

Late last night as I got home from being away for the weekend, just as I was drifting off to sleep, I suddenly thought, SHIT! I didn't do a review thread for that stupid Snow White show. :rommie:

Second thought: fuck it, I'm too irresponsible to be entrusted with such things. Especially when they are scheduled on a weekend.

Third thought: unconsciousness until approximately now.

Anyone who wants to take over for me, please feel free. I usually don't even see shows until a day or two after they air.

Well I'll watch the damn show tonight and if there's no thread by tomorrow, then I'll probably start one. Maybe I should start one for next week too, given my procrastination tendencies. :rommie:

Start a topic for the entire season like the Walking Dead topic. Best choice for the lazy.;)

And for keeping the number of threads down. I don't know why we don't just do season threads in general.

My philosophy is to let threads proliferate. The fact that they get forgotten once they fall off the first page or first couple pages (does anyone dig further?) automatically keeps down the number of threads that reach a survival level of awareness.

I frankly hope it fails as a lesson to intellectual theft for the producers and executives involved.

They're all public domain characters, so what's the problem?

I think Hound of Ulster is referring to Fables. A comic book series that also recast fairy tale characters in modern day, which was being developed at ABC.

But, really, this show is pretty different, other than fairy tale characters in a modern context.

But...isn't Once Upon A Time on ABC

Networks recycle their shows/plots/premises, etc, all the time?

OUAT needs to up the complexity of its premise and world-building significantly. Two episodes in and it is already wearing out.

You can't build an entire season around Emma and the Mayor glaring at each other while sticking in some flashbacks to Far Far Away.

Well you can...but it will get boring real fast.

Right. But the point Hound is making: they STOLE the ideas in Fables for Once Upon a Time.... which means they wouldn't have to give the creators of Fables anything. Thus the verb: stealing.

It's own thing to recycle something of YOURS, it's different to recycle something belonging to someone else.

(Not that I think Fables and Once Upon a Time are substantially similar...)

After the pilot, I had assumed Emma would be rescuing a fairy tale every week and I am glad the show hasn't done that. Instead, the show is continuing to fill out the story that started in the pilot, giving each character motivation and reason for doing the things they did.

The second episode seem to be hinting at something Snow White did in the past that cause the witch to loose her happiness, turning her evil and psychotic. At least I hope that's what the episode is hinting at.

Bit of a shake-up in that we were led to think that the Queen would be the only villain. Now it seems that Rumpelstiltskin might be the real bad guy.
