"That book never happened!"

I just hope they don't do something like Destiny for Enterprise though the perameters of even that universe is hazy to me. Is it just an alien tourist excursion. I don't even want to say expedition because that would imply thet you're going somewhere for a reason. What is the state of the universe in ENT? How many starbases have been established, how many ships does starfleet have, has the Federation been formed yet?

PAD told me he hated the concept of killing Janeway and felt it would not have the desired results.

He was wrong then, because the death of Janeway garnered enough controversy that the languishing VOY Relaunch was refreshed.

Tasha had a meaningless death
Did she? She died doing her duty, with her boots on, attempting to secure the freedom of both Prieto and Tasha's friend, Deanna Troi. Lt Yar was murdered, yes, but what would have made it a meaningful death?

Do these people spend the rest of their lives in bed when a REAL person passes away?
Well, my grandmother certainly shut down a lot of her interests and hobbies when her 17-year-old daughter committed suicide. On Mother's Day. The event changed her life forever.

Traditional Greek women used to (still do?) wear black - forever - when their husbands died.

Members of the Bring Back Janeway Movement announced that they were giving up all ST novels as a result of her death. So yeah, that'd be the equivalent of someone spending "the rest of their lives in bed", I guess.

I say bring back Kirk and replace him with another actor...

Done. His name is Chris Pine. And he has Shatner's approval as his successor.

No, an older actor for a post movie era new tv series timeline. Pull someone else out of the nexus and say it's Kirk which would even allow things to be slightly different. One for adults and the other for kiddies.

Bones - Jim, the nexus must have affected you more than I thought.

Kirk - I'm alright bones.

Then make the nexus a connection to the Q continuum and get another actor to do a serious take on Q.

Spock's the really insane one, with him mind melding with his crazy father through Picard and seeing the Medusan, it's no wonder he sold out the TOS universe.

PAD told you a lot, didn't he Matthias?

am i the only one beginning to disbelieve him?

I met him at a Vulcon event in Tampa earlier this year. Between him signing copies of Imzadi, I spent an afternoon discussing Trek novels with him. Most fans just wanted a signature and left so he was willing to spend a lot of one on one time with me. It was pretty awesome, had a lot of questions answered.

I've never had an author not respond to a question, Star Trek or not. I've found authors generally like to talk your ear off about their work.

Heck, I can't imagine Peter David not wanting to talk at great length about whatever might come up at any given moment.

That'd be rich coming from McCoy, since you'd also be recasting that character's actor, too. In which case, if you're recasting everyone, why even mention the change of appearance and draw additional attention to it?

Why create a whole new older cast when the whole new younger cast have only done one film of a projected three?

One of the complaints about ST VI was that Paramount was peddling a major motion picture where the seven top-billed regulars were all 60+. If CBS ever does a new ST TV series, the cast will be younger rather than older.

Actually it was only Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley and Doohan who were 60 or over. The remaining top-billed cast were close to 60, so what you're saying still stands.

I would think that the casting of Kim Cattrall, Rosanna DeSoto and Iman were designed to ensure a balance of age within the prominent roles of the movie.

It was supposed to be the final sendoff for TOS crew and that would have been fine but... then came GEN and that ruined pretty much everything TUC was designed to do. Again, it was all about money and Paramount obviously thought that featuring Shatner and Stewart together would draw more interest in the film (which it did) but in the process they tainted the legacy of TOS crew.

Sure, but plans to youth-up the main cast with intended regulars (Decker, Ilia, Xon, Saavik, David) got thwarted.

Right. The original idea was that Saavik might be the first of a new, younger cast that would gradually take over the series as the original cast was phased out. But audiences preferred nostalgia over novelty, so it was the old guard that stayed and the newcomers that left.

How was that ever an option when of those five characters one never saw the light of day, two came and were written out before audiences ever saw them, one was replaced with an actress that was ... less good than the previous one ... audiences had nothing to do with this.

Sheer unadulturated power. What would the circus be without the clowns running the show and writing the damn scripts! The new ring leader is JJ, the son of a suit.

I did say Saavik was the first, didn't I? I wasn't talking about the TMP characters. I don't know if it was audiences or not, but my understanding is that the intention was to phase out the older cast in favor of a younger cast, but for whatever reason, that didn't happen. Every attempt the movie franchise made to introduce a lasting change -- adding new characters, killing off main characters, destroying the ship -- got undone within two movies. Whether it was the audience or the studio heads or the filmmakers, someone decided that nostalgia should win out over change.
