Quinto is out of the closet

tired-sleeping-smiley-17376.gif

Must be a slow news day--if you can consider this newsworthy...

He is pretty much the closest to A list actor that has ever come out. It is big news.
No, what would be big news is the plot of the next Trek movie or who might be playing a new important character in it. Call me again when that news breaks.

Yeah I don't think you are living in the same universe as the rest of us. A young A-list or close actor coming out is very big news. It's never really happened before. Some old retired A=listers like Chamberlain have come out and C listers have come out and a few B-listers have been outed against their will but this is new. The Hollywood machine has never allowed this to happen before. In the past they have put an amazing amount of pressure on actors to not do this.

Studies have been presented showing that people can tell sometimes just by looking at photographs of a persons face.

Seriously? That would be an empirical argument for "they are different".

Yes seriously but obviously it's still controversial. Here is just one article on it.

That's... interesting. So nature actually built in a mechanism to spot homosexuals?

Gaydar does exist but all the article says is that ovulating women are MORE accurate. Some gay men have more feminine features, which might be as a result of a conscious effort if they want to 'advertise', and ovulating women seem more attuned to those visual cues. The experimenters may well have chosen pictures with such visual clues. There are also plenty of gay and bisexual men who do not look or act the slightest bit gay. Don't read too much into it. I doubt they picked pictures of butch gay lumberjacks - they're testing the women, no the men's fashion sense.

Considering how incredibly widespread homosexuality is in the animal kingdom and that it's prevalence seems to stay at roughly the same percentage throughout populations over time, it must serve some purpose. If so then the ability to spot it would also serve a purpose.

Yeah I don't think you are living in the same universe as the rest of us.
No, it's quite frankly the reverse. This is a Star Trek XI and beyond forum. Why should I care about Quinto's personal life? Why should I care about any Trek actor's personal life?

Because one of the cast made the world wide news by doing an almost unprecedented thing. An up and coming A-lister and co lead of the Star Trek franchises reboot, a movie franchise worth billions of dollars came out. What happens next is a complete unknown.

It was incredibly brave. This is big. For Hollywood it could potentially be world changing. Any young A-lister doing this would be a really big deal and it was a Trek actor who did this. How would this not be news on a Trek site?

Because by revealing part of his personal life and thereby potentially risking his career, Quinto is helping the fight for LGBT equality and, therefore, for the creation of a world of real freedom and equality -- one that lives up to the ideals of Star Trek.

Actually, it's not. I think they're going to make Star Trek XII and Quinto will be in it.

Oh please. I mean, more power to him--and all the other "young A-listers" who have come out before him--but it truly is impossible for me to care less about Quinto's love life.
How would this not be news on a Trek site?
For those of us who don't care, mind, or are surprised that Quinto is gay, it's not.

I don't understand why it's considered a career risk. Is there any Hollywood star in the last decade that has announced their sexuality and hurt their career? In fact, a large number of them seem to be doing just fine or even better afterward.

It might be a big thing if he was the first celebrity to do it, but he's not, and he's still pretty far from the A-list. Nevertheless, I still think it's more newsworthy than most of the topics on the Trek XI page, which doesn't say much.

Yes it's a complete unknown. His career could collapse. He could be blacklisted. He could be accepted. No one knows. Because prior to this Hollywood has gone out of their way to prevent something like this from happening.

We are talking about a business so old fashioned and conservative that they still beard their employees. Think about that for a moment. The essentially force young actors to live a lie even marry people they don't love in order to keep up the appearance of being straight.

EDIT I don't think you understand No young A lister has ever "come before him" on this. It's unprecedented. There is a reason it's being covered so widely. Even if you don't care about his sexuality you should care that it is a Trek actor doing this amazingly brave thing

Well look what happened to Rupert Everett (career implosion) and Tom Hardy (forced to recant by his handlers). Quinto is pretty much the highest tier actor to come out. If it doesn't hurt his career then hopefully this will become a non issue.

Most of those actors are character actors or lesser-star actors, though. Quinto may not quite be A-list yet, but he's been a rising star with the potential to become A-list for some time.

For him to come out of the closet, therefore, is a genuinely big deal. Most A-list action-hero movie stars are still expected to be heterosexuals who obey traditional "masculine" gender roles.

Do you seriously believe that Quinto will be fired from Star Trek XI because he's gay? Do you really--in all total honesty--believe they will no longer allow him to play Spock anymore because of this?

See above comment.

No, I don't think you understand that I don't care and that there are other people who also don't care. Why is it so difficult to comprehend that there are people in the world who couldn't give a flip about this?
No young A lister has ever "come before him" on this. It's unprecedented.
You really don't know your Hollywood history then. Quinto is not the first "young A lister" to ever come out, so it's definitely not unprecedented. Heck, Neil Patrick Harris is a far more well known "young A lister" than Quinto is.
There is a reason it's being covered so widely.
I believe in my first post I said it was a slow news day, yes...
Even if you don't care about his sexuality you should care that it is a Trek actor doing this amazingly brave thing
Sorry, but I don't care. It's irrelevant to my enjoyment of Trek, or of Quinto's performances.

The question is not, "Will Quinto be fired from Star Trek 2?" He won't.

The question is, "Will Quinto be able to get another job as a leading male character in a major mainstream motion picture now that it's publicly known that he is an LGBT American?"

When NPH came out he was no where near A-List. Try again
