iOS 5 and iCloud go live

I like how your using ripped off, so should we count the ways Android has ripped off the iPhone? Should we make a spread sheet of the ripoffs for each handset or can we just go iPhone vs Android? Does Android do notifications better? could be.

Most people do not charge their iDevice on their computer. So for the 99% rest of us, the wireless syncing is great. I won't even comment on your comparison of the Kindle and the iDevices and iCloud. So off base, its not worth it.

I updated several devices, didn't have one App move and all my album art is there. Weird that it happen on your lone device, sorry to hear. Curious. Maybe do a restore and see what happens.

Really with the 200 updates, you have a few measly complaints and find it wasn't worth it.

Anything really...it's ripped off android by putting in a pull-down notification bar...which is better on android...

it's ripped off kindle with the cloud and the wi-fi syncing...which the device has to be plugged in to use, and since i charge my ipod through my laptop...this does nothing for me!

all my music has somehow lost their album covers and it's reorganised my apps so they're in random order...

All in all I wish I hadn't bothered!

I just finally was able to migrate to iCloud. It stalled several times, but the last time went through. I set up my iPhone and iPad as well, can't wait to have everything everywhere. One little issue, can't access my email through the iCloud web portal. Keeps saying there is an error. However I can access my calendar and everything else. So not bad, now I have to accomplish the wife's migration. I however may wait until she's home from work.

MegaButtHz.

I did the Lion, iTune, iPhone and iPad updates all last night and all went without a hitch, through the downloads were on the slow side.

I'm not blown away by anything, through iCloud might be cool, but that remains to be seen.

I'm looking forward to iTunes Match.

I've suddenly gone off iCloud. I thought it was gonna have a repository like DropBox but apparently not. Microsoft and PDF files are currently not being accepted.

Sod this. I'm going to SkyDrive.

Apparently a lot of people were under the mistaken impression that iCloud was meant to be a DropBox killer, when in fact it's basically a media sync service. So, it's only designed to deal with certain kinds of files: music, photos, etc.

Kind of weird that so many people thought it was something else, though. Did Apple totally drop the ball when it came to promoting this?

Half and half. The syncing tool was well promoted but so was the 'back up your documents' option, which people (that I've read lots of comments from on other forums) interpreted as a drag and drop system for simple file retention online.

Having the word 'cloud' in the name doesn't help the wrong impressions either.

It was pretty clear to me, however my wife was under the same impression. I really like what iCloud is for far, plus I can imagine the future with it. I think a lot of the problem is people want everything right now. They say it doesn't do what Dropbox does. Which is true, Apple doesn't do a lot of what other singular companies does. They have a bigger picture to contend with then what these other companies, who really only specialize in smaller operations.

That just makes it sound like every other Apple product at launch: complete enough to be useful, but missing just enough features to make it annoying.

You're far too kind. Apple's internet offerings have made the Mac OS X Public Beta look like the epitome of a polished and well-developed product experience. iCloud was supposed to break that streak (the end-result famous "What's MobileMe supposed to do? Then why the fuck doesn't it do that?" story), but it is not off to an auspicious start.

I don't want all my songs, photos, and files synced across everything. Our big iMac holds all that and gets backed up to an external hard drive via time machine daily/hourly. The laptop, iPad, and phones only have what they need. My syncs will mostly go one-way, to the iMac. Who wants every damn song and pic on their phone?

It was clear to me as well what it could do, I just wasn't aware I needed an app to upload my files. I thought that was fine for those with iOS devices, but as well as that there would be the basic file directory for us drag-and-droppers (I know you just "drag and drop" files into the iWork apps on iCloud but I meant that figuratively :p).
