Slightly OT: Future truck

OK, so I've not made anything for a few weeks and I was sitting bored at my desk in the oil refinery watching all the tankers rumble by. I thought what the hell, I'll make a futuristic looking tanker.

It was knocked out in a couple of hours, nothing very detailed and more an exercise to get me into making stuff again. I was asked if it was specifically a tanker, and when I looked at it I figured it looked very similar in proportions to aviation fuel tankers, which are nice and low for getting under wings, etc. I decided to make it specific...

I dont know if aircraft of the future will need oil based fuel, but what the hell. The low profile and smooth running tyres would suit an airport, I might try and do a little scene to suit. First I need to make some airport...

Nice looking truck! I get what you're going for in the front view, but the "door" in the back completely upends that, making it seem like a cargo truck to me.

A lot of the aviation tankers had their connections on the side or rear, with doors or roller covers hiding the equipment. Most fire engines in the UK are like that too. The roller door covers a multitude of sins, and I stuck a couple of hatches in the side to suggest stuff there as well. It could be a cargo truck as well I suppose, just not a very tall one.

Ok. I don't exactly pay attention to the trucks at an airport, just the planes, being an aerospace engineer and all.

I was a part time worker airside during summer at college. It was there that I saw the 747 tug and realised that's what they made the Aliens APC out of. Freaked me out a bit.

The Gerry Anderson influence has been noted elsewhere. I suppose it's what happens when you grow up watching Anderson shows.

That's why Axeman put the "OT" in his thread title. He didn't claim this was representing part of the Trek timeline. He just wanted to show us a kick-@ss beauty of a truck.

Y'know, sticking everything behind hatches like that not only delivers a more futuristic-looking vehicle, but it also provides some security. I often drive along behind big trucks of one sort or another and wonder what would happen if I pulled that lever or twisted that handle.

There should be some separation seams for working on the engine. A modern tractor-trailer often has a shell over the engine or sometimes even the whole cab tilts forward to allow access to the guts of the thing.

I'm with you, Psion, I dont likeimportant bits sticking out all over the place open to the elements and sabotage. I especially dont like it on something that has to move at any speed through air or water, it's only going to cause drag and wear.

It's very nicely done, but I feel the need to point out that low profile tyres are anything BUT smooth running. The lower the profile of the tyre, the less air and sidewall there is to absorb shock of bumps, which have to be handled by the suspension. Low profile tyres are all about handling. Or, in the case of most of them on passenger cars, posing.

My fault, by smooth running I didn't mean the vehicle, I meant they needed a smooth surface. There's no suspension travel to speak of, and with those wheels & tyres the truck would need to be on an airport or a racetrack to avoid grounding out or shattering the drivers spine like glass on every bump.
