Best Doctor Who Theme version ever?

The John Pertwee / Tom Baker version felt more haunting than the later versions and as a child who was terrified of the Daleks and Robots of Death that added to the show's appeal.

The only problem I have with the Baker opening is I heard it for so long that I kinda got sick of it.

My own favourite versions of the theme are probably the series 4 theme and oddly enough the 1996 movie theme.

Although the original theme ranks pretty highly for me as well. While its not as bombastic as the later versions, the original credits don't half add to the mood and atmosphere of the series, leaving you wondering just what the hecks going to happen in this episode.

See, I thought the original was just plain mysterious. You don't need a Tardis flying through a time vortex for the credits to work. It was quite simple. Rolling baseline, "Doctor Who" emerging once the eerie main part kicks in, and then it fades out. Simple and effective.

My favorite by far are the Eccelstone and Tennant themes. Used to get me all stoked and worked up for Who.

I don't know what they were doing this last season, but it seems like they've been mixing the opening theme really low compared to the crashing thunder, etc. I can barely hear the music even with the volume turned up. Has anyone else been noticing?

I don't like the current mix. But the thunder isn't continuous, so you can still hear the music (they replaced the baseline with quarternotes, though, annoyingly enough).

The baseline has been steadily reduced in prominence since 2005. As much as I liked the new elements in the 2005 version, it would have been nice to hear more of Deila in there, especially the baseline.

@DakotaSmith - those are great! Do you happen to know where I can get a copy of the 2010 Proms? As in, music/mp3s?

Thanks!

Kind of surprised though the BBC doesn't put these out as albums or make them available for digital download.

The BBC does release some Proms on CD but mostly not. They're for broadcast.

For my taste, the first time I heard the NOW version I knew it was terrific. They've messed about with it but the orchestra just adds another dimension.
