Simpsons might be cancelled by Fox

Well, it took long enough, but Fox finally figured out a way to screw up the Simpsons.

What's the excuse? Have the ratings fallen off that significantly?

I think The Simpsons continues to anchor Fox Sunday Night for a while longer. We'll probably just see new actors filling the roles. I quit watching ten years ago... so a change doesn't bother me either way.

They finally replaced Shatner and Nimoy, so I don't think Castellaneta, Smith or Cartwright are irreplaceable.

It must suck to be one of those poor actors, they have to work 22 weeks a year for $8 million and now they're facing a downgrade to only $4 million.

They also get residuals from syndication, which is probably where the real money is....

That said, why should THEY take a pay cut just so Fox can keep their profits at the same level?

Yeah didn't this happen last time there was a wage negotiation? Though perhaps the cast may agree to a pay cut, just not one of that degree.

If The Simpsons did finally end, it's had an amazing run. I still enjoy it somewhat, even if it's nowhere near as good as it used to be. The right time to end was probably years ago.

However, I wouldn't be surprised to see the show continue to run. Surely the show is still amazingly profitable in so many ways?

Why shouldn't they? If viewership continues to dwindle, ad revenue will begin to erode and the show makes less money in first run. That $8 million a year was probably justifiable three or four years ago, but the landscape continues to change considerably.

They, like Fox, will continue to make money after the show ends in first run. But the question the voice actors have to ask themselves is this: if my work income drops to $0, will the residuals continue to support my current lifestyle?

I'm not saying they SHOULDN'T take a pay cut. I was more responding to the poster's attitude towards the negotiation.

Addressing your point, I'm sure they will take some sort of paycut, but probably not half. FOX is looking out for themselves, as they should, as the actors are. So, the idea of a 45% paycut, it's what FOX is offering, and mostly likely a deal FOR THEM, so THEIR profits aren't reduced.

So, again, to my point, why should the actors be the only ones to suffer?

Since they get a cut of each airing around the country? Yes. It will absolutely support their income. I can't imagine it couldn't.

Think about it. How many times a DAY does an episode of Simpsons air on 1 channel? Now just imagine how many times it airs on ALL of the channels through out the WORLD. They get a cut each and every time.

I cannot imagine someone getting $8 million a year in salary doing anything other than socking most of it away for the future. Once I had a house and a nice car, I wouldn't know how to spend even half of that. I guess people find a way, but damn. If they can't afford a pay cut, they've been horribly managing their money.

Not that that gives Fox license to treat them unfairly, though.

There is so much Simpsons in existence now that by the time you finish watching all the episodes, it's been so long that you've forgotten what the first ones were about, and you can start all over again in an eternal cycle of Simpsonsosity.

Time to cancel it.

Screw the cast, fire them and get new voice actors, it's not a big deal, people will notice the different voices, but will get used to it after 3 or 4 episodes.

Exactly. I have no sympathy for any argument that says that an actor who receives $8 million a year shouldn't pay higher taxes, but I have no sympathy for any argument that says he shouldn't earn that much in the first place.

I assume this is a parody comment.

As to the OP, Something tells me it's unlikely The Simpsons will be ending.

Right, how much "should" any worker earn? The fact that the actors are so highly paid just tells us how hugely profitable the show is, and how unique is their contribution to that profitability.

The last time Fox threatened not to renew the cast's contract, the voice acting community pretty solidly lined up against Fox, saying they would refuse to act as replacements. They understood it would weaken the market position for all voice actors.

I'm thinking a 45% pay cut is Fox's hard-core opening to negotiations and they will settle for less. If it's firm, I say the cast should walk. We shall see, I guess.

I watched last Sunday for the first time in a while and based on what I saw I think it may be time to retire that show.
