I like the mystery behind God?

Am I the only one who likes not knowing what the truth is. Does he exsit and if so what is he/she/it like. I think that's why I never got into any religion. Religion has to many suposeded answers that I don't believe in.

No, I do as well, hence my agnosticism. Judaism teaches that we as humans cannot comprehend the nature of God, so I just extend that further to making God wholly unknowable. God may or may not exist; it has no bearing on my day-to-day life; nor should it.

Likewise the world to come is unknowable. Again, Judaism teaches that our actions in this world should not be predicated upon the promise of a paradise in the world to come, but upon doing what is right. We'll all know what happens after death soon enough.

Well said. :techman:

I am of the mind that if any god or gods exist, they're completely irrelevant to our lives, so not much point bothering about them, and especially no good reason to enshrine religious-based beliefs into law.

In any case, the mysteries I'm interested in involve science, and science is always trying to answer them. ;)

You mean like "do not kill" and "only marry one partner at a time"?

"Do not kill" doesn't need a religious justification, just some semblance of respect for other people.

Monogamy is not religious in origin, either, though I don't think there should be laws against marrying as many people as want to get married. Would make a horrible mess of tax law, though.

god is a three year old toyota prius owned by my aunt. prove it isnt god religionists, prove it.

Turns out those are also useful maxims for living in a working society. Organized religion was a way to codify and enforce existing rules that already made sense as mankind evolved from small groups of hunter-gatherers to larger-scale farming and herding civilizations. Organized religion didn't give rise to those rules, the need to codify, justify, and enforce the rules and a desire to explain the world around them gave rise to larger-scale religions.

I'm still trying to find out why the all powerful needs followers, alters, gold baubles, or... anything.

They don't. It's just more convenient when god needs it. It's like saying until your brother gets back from Summer camp, you're going to stay in his room to keep it ready for when he returns. The only thing is that in all the years this claim has been made, no one has seen your brother, ever, and no one knows where your parents are to ask them.

I love mysteries-- and I love them best when their solved. Which is why I've always had a strong interest in the sciences.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no mystery behind any gods-- they're simply folklore.

Supposing God is unknowable is also really convenient for religions.

I see religion as a way to explain some of the mysteries, without really knowing for sure. If other knowledge comes along, beliefs get reshuffled.

Like life? If you think about it, life IS a miracle. The purposed of life is to enjoy it and have sex. [chuckle] Nobody knows for sure why life evolved on this earth...in this universe. Everything happens for a reason. Without the atoms there wouldn't be matters...and without water life wouldn't exist. I guess that's why a lot of major religions, especially Christianity, like using water as a mean of blessing someone...

Why does it even need a reason, other than that's just how chemicals came together based on various known processes? There is no great purpose to human existence, so make your own. Just try to make the world a slightly better place than it was before you got here. You don't need some invisible sky daddy promising you sky cake to do that.
