MYTHBUSTERS season premiere: "Bikes and Bazookas"

Hmm, there's a new main title theme this season. I don't like it. It has no melody.

Bike vs. car pollution: This didn't really seem to be a myth worth devoting half an episode to. They proved within the first 20 minutes that motorcycles produce far more pollutants than cars despite having better fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions. And the rest of the episode, trying to make the bike more fuel-efficient, was obviously a waste of time, since the bikes were more fuel-efficient to begin with and still had horrifically bad smog emissions. So clearly fuel efficiency is not the source of the problem. For some reason, motorcycles just aren't designed to burn fuel as cleanly as cars. Maybe there's not as much pressure on motorcycle designers to improve that because motorcycles aren't as widely used as cars.

Still, it was kind of a cool rig.

Bullet vs. RPG: Another myth that was pretty much busted right off the bat, but I guess due diligence required seeing through all the steps. I agree with their busted verdict, that the scene in the movie Red was impossible, but I would quibble about the assumption in the final test that the bullet and the RPG would be fired at the same instant. Wouldn't there be a question of reaction time? Given how incredibly fast those RPGs travelled, Malkovich's character would've probably been killed before he even realized the weapon had been fired, let alone before he was able to fire back.

Funny, it sounded like the work of the same composer to me, or at least someone emulating the rhythm, chords, and arrangement of the original theme.

I guess I was enjoying RED far too much to remember that RPGs had shaped charges, but as soon as that particular light bulb went off over my head last night, I realized the "myth" was busted before they even started.

Really disappointing that the molten copper missed the dummy in the end.

I was interested to hear a new take on the theme, but I didn't like this at all either. It might as well have been random noise in the background.

My bike gets fucking shitty mileage, so it's not even more eco-friendly in that respect. I get about 35 miles to the gallon, worse than most hatchbacks.

Not a bad episode. I liked the futuristic looking bubble-bike. I also learned a lot about RPGs that I hadn't known before.

We also learned that Jaime apparently was never a kid.

^Whereas Adam has never been an adult. It's a perfect team. :D

:techman:

Given what I've seen/heard about the various things they've done during the hiatus I'm surprised these two fairly "mild" things are what they come back with, though the stuff with the RPGs was fun.

I hated the new theme. Ugh.

One thing that bothers me is that it seems like Jamie/Adam operate completely independently from Keri/Tori/Grant. They need to do a myth where the two "teams" work together, when this dynamic really started rolling there was a lot more cross over usually with Adam and Jamie "checking in on the kids" -so to speak- to see how they were doing. (At one point even leading to infamous moment of Adam getting zapped by an Arc of the Covenant hooked up to a electric fence transformer.)

Any more it's like each team is completely unaware of the other.
