Vacation Days!

Leaving aside the economics, I think culturally Americans as a nation have a belief that hard work pays off that does not exist in the same way in quite a few other western nations.

I suspect if more Americans knew people in Europe were getting at least half their lunch hour paid and at least 20 days holiday leave aside from public holidays the 10-days standard would change.

Nah, it just makes people here think Europeans are lazy slackers and that's why we're better.

Other than that, though, I don't know what to do. That still leaves me with about 5 days to use up!
Travel. With a modicum of planning, you can do it on the cheap side, and you'll never regret it.
Travel? Where would you like me to go, exactly?

With my current financial situation, 5 days is not enough to go anywhere worthwhile. I can't afford to fly anywhere, and gas it too expensive drive anywhere.

Agreed...

I don't know if it's all of Europe, or just Iceland where I recently went. But nothing is open for very long, even during the week.

Grocery stores are open from like 11-5, less on Saturday, closed on Sunday. Restaurants close as early as 8. I rarely eat dinner until close to 9.

We found one liquor store that is open for ONE HOUR a day.

I'm sure there are things to see around your place: cities, towns, parks.

I'm not sure you have a good concept of where I live. :p

The closest city is Chicago, which is a 3-hour drive (round trip we're talking about $80 in gas), and I grew up right outside of it, so I really wouldn't consider that traveling.

Well, enjoy feeling superior whilst we enjoy having twice as much holiday then. I know who's having a better time in that scenario.

And I kind of like the fact that 24-hour shops are a rarity. The idea of going to a mall at 10-11pm is just bizarre.

Maybe.

But I find it difficult to believe there is nothing noteworthy in a 500 km radius. I know the US is scattered, but this is ridiculous. ;)
Within that radius, I'm sure I could find something, but that would be several hundred dollars in gas that I have no interest in spending.

I agree with iguana. I hate where I live yet can find plenty of things to do to keep me out of trouble. It's called making the best of what's around. You don't need someone or something else to entertain you.

And stop whining that gas is pricey. It's a hell of a lot cheaper in the US than most places. I do miss the days of $1.50/gal though, but it ain't coming back.

My last fill-up was €1.59/litre (that's $8.19/gal). :vulcan:

Pretty much the same here. I run the car until I get the orange warning light. My car gets close to 40mpg and it costs me £50 to fill the tank which I need to do three times a month. I feel zero sympathy for Americans when it comes to fuel prices.

Iguana told me I should travel. Doing random things around my town isn't traveling. Because of things like gas, I can't travel very far. I'm not whining about gas prices; I simply can't afford to do much right now.

Go on a hike and sleep in the rough!

Doesn't really seem like the right time of year for that. Too cold at night.

A tent and a really warm sleeping bag would address that. Think of the adventure!
I definitely want to go camping at some point, but I'd much rather do it with some friends. I don't know if I could convince anyone to do it before the year is up.

I'm not really looking for adventures right. I'm just wondering what I'm gonna do with this extra time off. Truthfully, I'll probably just end up using them randomly when I feel like sleeping in.
