Did the 50's Sci-fi monster movies needed to be remade?

In the case of Invasion of the Body Snatches, I've not seen the original, but would be (pleasantly) surprised to find that it's as good as the remake, because the remake is just a really, really good movie.

I haven't seen the remake, but the 1956 movie is quite good.

Interestingly, it was directed by Don Siegel, who later went on to make Dirty Harry.

A remake of Them! could be pretty cool. I'd like to see what they do with giant CGI mutant ants.

The one problem I foresee is the need to update the premise. There aren't any atomic tests going on in New Mexico any more.

GM supercrop experiments gone wrong, Ants now larger than buses attack, with appropriately larger muscular legs and so on.

You could set it in Japan and no, that would be pretty tasteless, wouldn't it? My bad

How about The Alligator People?

In fairness, I've seen Japanese kid's movies that use stock footage of Tokyo being struck by bombs.

The only two I've seen recently have been Target Earth (1954) and The Man Who Turned to Stone (1957). I didn't particularly like either of them and I think only the latter would have the potential for a good remake, but they'd have to change almost everything except the core concept.

I love most of the remakes listed so far. Except Invaders from Mars, that was dull and lifeless.

I didn't realize Phase IV was on MST3K. I thought it was a good movie as is.

It's the highlight of the KTMA season. Largely because, since the movie itself is interesting, Joel and company's neonatal riffing skills aren't as important as they'd otherwise have to be. ;)

I'm sorry but The Thing 1982 is the DEFINITIVE and TRUE adaptation of John Campbell's "Who Goes There"., it did Campbell justice on film.

This.

OTOH, The Day The Earth Stood Still didn't need a lame remake.

Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers has had a variable track record (it's about time for a good version after two rubbish ones in succession)

So: nom nom nom...RAWR!!!?

I guess that makes as much sense as the original premise. :)

Well, they are B-Movies, so yeah basically

I liked Phase IV. I don't recall the wraparound explanation of the why ants are behaving weirdly making any sense, but the film mines the concept of animals cooperating in ways that are creepily devastating to humanity much like The Birds. It's one of those nicely slow-burning 70s sci-fi movies like Andromeda Strain.

I have seen both films. They are both very good and worth watching. They're also rather different tonally - the first film plays basically on thinly veiled communist paranoia, while the second seems to have more to do with the fear of simply going insane. They both have thoroughly memorable endings, though the remake does squarely win on that count.

...The Thing from Another World was a good movie on it's own but a poor adaptation of the novel ...John Carpenter adored the original since his childhood as he wanted to go back to the original novella for the film. His remake was truly faithful to Campbell's vision and also paid a bit of homage to Howard Hawk's version.

The 82 remake got universally bad reviews and was compared unfavorably with the Hawk's version....

My recollection is that it good decent reviews but didn't do well at the box office because it came out the same weekend (or weekend after) E.T. It's rated 8.2/10 at IMDB and and 80% at Rotten Tomatoes.

I will say that, when the movie was first released, I think the downbeat ending soured a fair number of moviegoers (and possibly critics) who were expecting something more akin to the ending of the original or the more recent "Alien" (which in many ways is also a remake of Hawks' film, only set in space). As with some other movies, as time goes on, I think people came to appreciate the Carptenter version more fully.

The remake of The Fly was worthwhile. Little Shop of Horrors was not a remake, but a filmed version of a musical based on the Corman film, and it was fine. The remakes of The Thing, Invaders From Mars and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers were inferior.

Carpenter's Thing was inferior to Hawk's?

You are on crack.

I don't mind a good remake but half the time they are rushed and you get loads of sfx's and crap story. I agree a remake of the Fly was much better than the original (for horror), but what about the remake of the Attack of the 50ft Woman, it turned out to be mild porn.

I remember that. It involved the line "Well what do you want me to do? Get my scuba gear and dive in?" That was pretty great.

Normally, I enjoy old-fashioned SFX quite a bit, but, unfortunately, Attack Of The 50-Foot Woman is an exception. In that one, the low quality of the effects are pretty distracting. :(
