What's it like to flop?

Yeah, I hear Momoa was good casting, but the problem was he was in a limp, color by numbers fantasy adventure film, rather than a Conan movie.

Conan, shafted by a hack script and jobbing director. Also happened with Highlander The Source.

We have two parties in this Country. The Stupid Party and the Evil Party. Every once in awhile, they get together and do something stupid and evil, and we call that Bi-Partisanship I can't believe there are still people who blindly support one party or the other, and blindly demonize the other. They are two peas in a pod, interested in only obtaining, retaining, and expanding their power (And repaying the Contributors who helped them into office). neitehr aprty is interested in helping the Public or the Country as a whole.

Comparing a film to Highlander the Source is just... cold!

To be fair, you have to admit that Conan, for some reason, was released in a bad time period for action films. You don't stick your big budget action films at the end of summer!

^Indeed. Films like this flop because they're not very good AND the marketing department weren't lying hard enough.

Having said that of course, I should probably in fairness mention that The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, The Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner and The Big Lebowski were all flops...so yes, there are sometimes extenuating circumstances. Usually down to under promotion, much stronger competition or the audience simply not being ready for it yet. However, in the case of Conan, I think it was just because it looked naff.

Nothing, which is why I posted it to head off the Political spat that was already going on too long.

Which is appreciated. Hopefully, for everyone's benefit, they've gotten the political spasm out of their systems for this thread. It's been overall a good topic of discussion that doesn't deserve to be sidetracked.

Yes, but it also had a $30M budget.

I'm not saying a different release date would have saved Conan, but it does seem odd to release such a movie so late in the summer.

Apes did well, yes. But that was a shock to everybody. I don't think the studio, or anybody else for that matter expected a Planet of the Apes prequels to do well.

Good word of mouth will take you the distance that the ad budget did not. And Apes was a GREAT film, which took everyone by surprise.

IMO, there hasn't been a great Apes film since the original.

I agree with you there. It isn't an easy concept to expand into multiple sequels.

Funny thing is, Tim Burton's remake did slightly better than Rise. I can't imagine that was due to good word of mouth!

I'm betting that one performed due to anticipation, marketing and Tim Burton, who at the time didn't have the red flags in front of his name that he does now.

It can be tricky to catch everything when you're on mobile. However, Sean is right. That political discussion was a sidebar that has now been ended, so we can get back to the regular discussion.

Oh, and Mark Wahlberg was a box office draw at one point in his career. Before Max Payne and The Happening.
