Supernatural 7x1 "Meet the New Boss" spoiler discussion thread

I liked it. Didn't feel as awkward as last season's premiere. But then it took quite a while last year for me to warm up to the arc and only in retrospect did I appreciate a lot of what came before. I sort of agree the Cas-as-God thing might have more mileage, but at the same time what could Dean/Sam/Bobby really do with him fully aware of them while he runs around and delivers judgment?

Really liked the Lucifer/Sam thing and, of course, Japanese cartoon porn.

Well nowhere near the level of the brilliant In My Time of Dying or the very good Lazarus Rising, but certainly leaps and bounds better then Magnificent Seven and last season's opener.

Pretty much liked every thing in the episode except for the spell used to raise Death as it doesn't even come close to matching what we knew was a requirement for raising death (not to say their can't be more then one way, but...)

Loved the us of the rebuilding of the Impala to signify the passage of time. Loved Dean in this episode. Really did. I was worried at first that the writers would have Dean forgive Castiel, and in no way shape or form could I buy that. Sam I could as Sam does know what its like to delude one's self and to make very tragic mistakes (though in fairness to Sam he was lied to over and over again, unlike Castiel).

Loved Death The actor just really plays the role well, very pleased to Lucifer again, Marc is awesome and had no idea he was in the episode.

Love, love Sam's issues, and pray that this is a long term issue (well be less in love if its a short term issue). While I know the show has no money, this is something that absolutely shouldn't be settled in an episode (or a few) I want this to last at least a season (if not for the rest of the series run).

I have been joyfully awaiting the removal of Castiel (A character I love, but one who's presents really kills any significant threat to the primary cast), and I thought they would either kill him by the 2nd episode or have him go off screen and appear later in the season to reform.

But perhaps instead, we get a Misha Collins playing the "Big Bad" but a completely new character. One who (like all SPN Big Bads isn't in only a handful of episodes). I think I might be able to get into that.

A say a B+, not great by any stretch or even A- material, but over all really strong.

Far better opener than last years Exile On Main St. so I liked it, but still part of me wishes that this is the final season. The fact is that there isn't really anything "new" and "fresh" they can do within the universe - at least not with the budget the show has - and in my mind the Apocalypse was still the biggest threat they had, nothing can top that. Sure, as a concept I love the lovecraftian chaos that these Leviathans represent, but again, with the small budget, I don't think they can really pull it off properly.

Umm... they better not have killed Castiel... he's my favorite character! I'm pretty shocked they ended the "Casitel as Evil God" story in one episode like that, I assumed that would be the whole season.

That's what everyone thought...which is probably why they did it. This show loves misdirection. Of course, right now Cas is still technically the big bad. It's just that it's not the Cas we were expecting.

On the plus side...the show gets high marks from me for going after hypocritical gay bashing closet case preachers and for having Cas smite their version of Michelle Bachman.

I actually am also very surprised (pleasantly so) that they killed the angel Castiel (at least it appears so). As I expected Castiel to be in these two episodes, and then be absent for most of the season to return for the last couple of the season and fight for his redemption.

Instead they are either going Castiel dead now, new entity using Jimmy's host body who might be around later representing the big bad of the season.

Or Castiel dead now, Jimmy's body host for the big bad, but that they move off of jimmy's host body next episode and we never see Misha Collins again.

Props to Misha for basically playing three different characters last night. I thought he did well.

I sort of thought they could have searched for the "first" God, considering a couple (a few?) seasons ago it was established that he's been hanging out on Earth for a while.

I was hoping that when they needed crystal created from an act of God that they were going to take that stained glass window Cas created. Now that I think about it though I suppose Cas wasn't truly God.

I really loved Death. Such a great character.

He's one of my favorites, I like both him and Crowley. I always say they need to bring back that "O Death" song from his first appearance when he shows up.

I was wondering if that was the case or if I was just projecting re: Bachman.

Well since they had zero success when they tried that before and had the help of an angel in doing so, I don't see it panning out (after all if God wasn't going to bother to be found with Lucifer up and running, why would Castiel be worth it. Sure Castiel ahd gained more power then what I assume Lucifer had (though not only was he a powerful arch angel he did have Death at his beck and call.

Heck the one angel who did on occasion here from God (who stayed in the garden) said God told them he wouldn't be helping. That keeping them alive to fight was about all he was going to do.

The show has been lucky in many ways to get some great supporting characters, Death is certainly one of them. He rocks.

That's how I feel. I've felt for a long time that the show would have lost absolutely nothing if they had wrapped up the show in S5. You can just tell that Sera is grasping at straws trying to sustain the show. She also seems to think each season needs an arc--but kinda like HEROES they basically have fallen into a predictable formula of how these arcs and big bads play out. It has gotten stale. I wouldn't mind had she gone to a purely episodic structure with no big threat driving the season and the guys just dealing with monsters of the week--presuming the writers could craft some fresh, fun and entertaining one-offs but frankly they haven't demonstrated that ability in a while so again I just think the show has said and covered all that needed to be covered.

And I don't know about others but the brother dynamic has become predictable too with the constant love/worry/keeping things from others etc.

After last night's episode I decided after avoiding spoilers and trailers all summer to read up on what episodes were coming up and frankly none of it sounds the least bit interesting to me. I thought I'd be able to remain with the show until it ended but frankly it's become so uninteresting to me that I'm giving up on it like I did with FRINGE. I'd much rather remember the show in its heyday than the corpse it has become that CW keeps resurrecting.

Interesting twist. I like how this show keeps changing up the mythos every few years.

As a bit of a Lovecraft fan I of course get a bit of a kick out of the idea of the Old Ones making an appearance. They may even be able to tie this back into the "pagan gods" and account for how they fit into things. Demigod-like offspring of the Old Ones perhaps? A Dagon cameo anyone?

Small point, but did "Leviathan" refer to itself in the plural? As in there are several Leviathans in there? I'm not an expert of Judo-Christian mythology by any stretch of the imagination, but I recall Leviathan was partnered with Behemoth as guardians of the mouth of hell. I realise this show doesn't stick too close to scripture when it interferes with the story, but it'll be interesting to see how far they take it with this new box of baddies.

I thought it was a great episode. Way better than the season six premiere.

I'm glad to see Dean taking charge again. Binding Death has to be one of his craziest plans ever. But when you are desperate, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Glad that Sam's problems with his mind isn't over yet. I was worried they could drop it completely after Sam met his doubles in his mind last year. It was nice seeing Lucifer again too.

Seems like the new villain of the season is the Leviathans. I hope they stick with them for the entire season. One of the problems I had with season six were that there were too many characters that went nowhere. I hope the writers have learned their lesson.

The actor that plays Death is still great. I love the whole stand off with Death and God Cas near the end of the episode.

I remember about 12 years ago, I pointed out to someone that dinosaurs weren't in the bible and they mentioned the leviathan.

Also, I loved Lucifer's line to Sam... "This isn't you going guano." :rommie:

I thought it was an exciting season premiere. Yeah, the Castiel as God idea could have provided some interesting points but I agree that it would make for some boring stories if Castiel always knew what the Winchesters were doing and could smite them down. It would come out very melodramatic...just as well they wrapped it up in one show. I like the idea about rebuilding the Impala as showing the longer passage of time going by on the screen. They can always retcon points into that time frame later if the plots need it.

Was I the only one who thought that Dean was a little too laid back about the whole deal while he was rebuilding his car? It was like he knew something that the others didn't?

For me I just saw it as the one thing Dean did have control over. Working on something solid to rebuild, to hold some form of center for his well being.

So...it was good? I just flew back into town. Exhausted as hell and facing more hell as a long work week looms. Hopefully I'll get a chance to catch the episode at some point this week before next week airs.
