I was just watching Deadlock, and Doc does a frackin' Fetal Transport. I never really gave it a thought until just now, but there's Naomi's mom screaming in pain, there's a complication then poof! Fetal Transport. All is well. If I was on that bed screaming my head off in agaony and Doc suddenly pulled that one out of his hat, I'd have to kick his a$$ for making me scream in the first place.

How many women would even contemplate natural delivery if they could transport it right out of them? Seriously! :rommie:

Makes me think about all the other awesome technology they have. So many to choose from...

Sam would have had the choice.

The choice to carry the baby to term or have to raised in an artificial womb.

The choice to have the baby transported out or pushed out like the body was soooooooooo badly designed to do. (Actually I understand that you can request a c-section these days just if you feel like it. It doesn't have to be an emergency. But that's been true for a very long time.)

    And finally...

The choice to have drugs during the delivery or not.

Naomi died because Sam is a hippy.

A modern women would have transported the foetus into an artificial womb after the first trimester and got back to work.

Actually a truly modern women would have put the embryo into stasis... Not that the ship doesn't lose power every other day. And then seen to raising her girl when everything wasn't such a flustercuck.

But then a real women has the option and choice to be as backward as she feels is necessary.

Being a hippy is soooo overrated!

I don't think any smart women would have an embryo put in stasis on voyager. Nor would they have put the fetus in an artificial womb if it would require power that was most always going out. Yeesh. But the delivery... cracks me up since there are episodes that refer to the 'middle ages' of medicine on VOY and their middle ages are our current practices. :guffaw:

Then Sam and Belana scream their way through delivery. Hello! Middle ages!

MCCoy wasn't so kind in the Voyage Home before he grew that old lady a new kidney.

Remember, an artificial womb could be something as simple as a caged cow which doesn't need a power source, which happened on Picket Fences in the 80s (The song! The Song about how simple the Romans are!)so barring "ethics" should be possible by now to use animals as surrogates right now.

[gloat]I have All of Picket Fences on a shelf right beside me[/gloat].

I'm working my way through Charmed right now, and this turn of the century "elderly" Holly Marie Combs is drawing out all sorts of memories about Picket Fences, and it's almost enough to have me investigate this Pretty Little Liars bollocks she's hanging out within these days.

    Almost.

    ...

My talk about a modern human woman has me wonder about a modern Klingon Woman? The Blokes all have beards you understand because they think it is cowardly to shave off your beard since at any time during a duel your opponent might/WILL grab you by your beard and pull you square into their swiftly rising kneecap.

Klingon women ear honour by having more difficult and painful pregnancies, so much so, that they would probably dose their children with steroids to make them larger and develope skinnier birthing canals.

Only pussies do child birth "easy".

Actually, if the child doesn't rip and rend it's way out of it's mother like a xenomorph out of John Hurt, it's likely that both parents would disown thier kid for being a wimp.

(Why do I think I remember Worf cutting Alexander's umbilical cord with his teeth? Did that really happen?)

B'Elanna was though of herself as human first however.

The Maquis by definition are hippies.

    Cooking.

    How barabric.

    There's DIRT on their vegetables!

If Sam buddied up with a maquis Gal-pal, (A personal life. Friends. it happens.) maybe it was a flooding of Maquis ideology that had her dissuaded form taking advantage of all that the 24th century had to offer in prenatal care?

Remind me about how Seska delivered her kid in Basics?

Charmed is fun. Goofy scifi fun. Kind of a guilty pleasure sort of thing. I liked the later years the best though at some point Pheobe becomes a caricature or herself. But generally it's good fun. I think the best seasons for storylines were the ones with Chole, Chris, and even season 7.

As for Seska, I think it was just a normal old fashioned birth. The only drama around it was that it was supposedly Chakotay's. But I can't imagine her not pushing a baby out of her and beating down everyone in sight as she does it.

I ignored Charmed till Cole turned up. the whole mascaraed and doomed love was ace. Would he turn good or would she turn evil because it was unconscionable that they wouldn't live happily ever after together under one of those banners.

Imagine if Chakoty and Seska hooked up again after they got an accurate spine count on the lady... Would she go back to Voyager and his bed or would she killKullah and make him her Queen? But of course Seska was no where as near gray as Garrak.

Do you think they reused that borgwombmaturator that one used to give birth to himself? Could they plug in different combinations fo DNA, or did they have to turn it off because it kept tyring to pump out more Mulchaey drones?

Anyone on Voyager could have an adult child a day after their biological clock started ticking.

Charmed is pretty fun, but the acting of Holly Marie Combs is probably some of the worst and one-note in broadcast television history.

And I'd love a replicator, but rarely you see them make any decent food in them. And of course Janeway's replicator appears to be the only one in starfleet that burns food.

but if all she can do well is pissed off and bitchy, gods can't she do pissed off and bitchy swell.

Replicators can't make chocolate or booze.

    What's the bloody point?

As far as a fetal transport goes I'd imagine there are still some risks involved in using it to the baby which is why they were doing it the natural way until circumstances changed.

As far as tech I wish we had now I'd have to say phasers. The ability to stun people without killing them would be a huge advantage to our militaries and police. Of course the flip side is the ability to vaporize people on sight.

    Transporters would be sweet too.

I keep hoping for transporter tech. That would be awesome.

I think our version of stun guns are tazers. Is that even the correct spelling? Of course they're limited by their need for wires.

I've occasionally wondered if we did have phasers, would people just randomly stun people that got on their nerves? To win an argument? For stealing a parking space? :guffaw:

No, they've had tazers for a while now (fired by a regular shotgun) that fires the whole battery (capacitor actual) at the person you're aiming at. No wires stretching between the weapon and the target.

I watched Charmed when it first came on but stopped after Cole left. A few years ago I had a hankering to finish up the series and ended up with the whole set on DVD. Definitely a guilty pleasure. :bolian:

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one...anything to get an extra hour of sleep in the morning.

And, yes, I'll say it...I want a holodeck.

holodeck! Definitely! How did I not think of that?

And all the medical technology. Healing bones and injuries with the wave of a wand? How could anyone NOT want that!

Transporters would sure make travel around the world pretty nifty. Even if you had to stop at a few other transporters along the way, it would be worth it.

I do not want transporter technology to become real, for a number of reasons. First, I think it's way too complicated even for imaginary advanced quantum computers to be realistic. The implications are really terrible--you're actually destroying a person and rebuilding them somewhere else. It would be the ultimate "soul" test, as you'd expect that if you're killed at the source, your soul would be left behind... how would it know where to locate your body after being transported? The person on the other end would be alive but as if their personality was stripped from them. People would conclude that hey, there IS a soul, and religion would get a serious kick start. Or, the reverse... that if you can kill someone then revive them in a far away location and they're perfectly normal, what happened to the soul? It could possibly kill religion.

And then of course we've be faced with all of the things about the transporter that Star Trek ignored, like the ability to clone, rather than destroy and relocate. Or, to store a complete buffer capture of yourself at a certain point in time most physically desirable, like 25, and then reincorporate the memory engrams of your 50 year old self into the 25 year old copy. It would essentially become a fountain of eternal youth.

All of this would stir up way too much chaos... better off not having the technology.

However, I wouldn't mind some of the medical advances, like the ability to restore bones and skin in a matter of minutes. :)

There's an active thread at the moment which discusses the (IMO) very likely scenario that transporters DO NOT take a person apart and reassemble them like that, but just phase the complete individual to the destination (OK, there's a lot more than that!)

The thread is here and the transporter seems to make a lot more sense that way.
    A specific post is here.

Having seen The Fly I definitely don't want to see/use a transporter!

    I'd love to see/use a holodeck though

That always bugs me. I'll swallow time travel, death rays, and cyborgs, but I can't believe that obstetrics actually regresses over the next few millennia. SciFi lady screaming in labor = hack writer struggling to inject drama.

I haven't read that thread but there's an episode of the Outer Limits (I think) that centers around a transporter station. The secret is that a duplicate is made at the destination and the original is killed.

As for technology, I'd want borg nanites reprogrammed to do something more useful than assimilate people.
