He's always been a big Trekkie. Back when he was a prince, he was a guest star on Voyager.

I remember that. It was a big deal in our house at the time because my dad had interviewed then-Prince Abdullah only weeks beforehand.

Jordan is one of the more pragmatic and sensible countries in the Middle East. I know that's not exactly saying much, given the regional competition, but still.
This is just the latest example...
I'd be concerned about working conditions, both during construction and after opening. While Jordan is one of the more progressive Arab states (sort of a backhanded compliment, as Holdfast notes) and is slowly instituting reforms in these areas (especially after protests during the Arab Spring uprisings this year), it still has major problems with human trafficking, indentured servitude, child labor, forced prostitution, and lack of women's and worker's rights such as: pay and passports being withheld, female workers being locked in their quarters during off-hours, and verbal and physical abuse by employers.
I like the idea of a Trek theme park, and appreciate that the king is a huge fan, but it would feel kind of weird visiting a Star Trek-based theme park if it were built under conditions antithetical to the spirit of the shows. If it is built under better conditions as a spearhead for better working conditions around the country, I'd be happy to go.

Well, they had a screening of nuTrek at the White House and he said he liked it. Hopefully he was just being a politician. But, yes, he is a fan of TOS.
