The Bridge

Are there any diagrams of the bridge? We've got tons of diagrams and blueprints from The Cage to Voyager, but I can't find anything for the new bridge. Kirk, Sulu and Chekov seem in their proper places, but I can't figure out anything else about the new bridge.

There are no diagrams or set blueprints, but there is an awesome panoramic photo of the bridge floating around the internet somewhere. On it you can make out the labels on the perimeter stations. Clockwise from the main viewer/window they are DEFN (defense), COMM (communications), SCNC (science) and ENVR (environment). The "Art of the Movie" shows a small part of a front-elevation set blueprint labelling one of the podiums behind the captain's chair as "AUX COMM". The other's presumably an auxiliary science station.

No idea what the consoles on either side of the helm and nav stations are, nor the small perimeter ones tucked away on either side of the viewscreen/window.

One door leads to a turbolift, the other to the corridor network behind.

I think that's about it.

Excellent links, love the way you can zoom in using the mouse wheel, many thanx. :)

Not sure I like the 'Joystick' controls on the Helm. I guess it's something I'll get used to.

I still think that's an awesome design ... if you get rid of the lights that point into the operators' faces and extra greebles like the bar-code scanners.

The individual consoles are gorgeous.

Thanks! I'd never seen the panoramic view before. I knew there were no official blueprints or diagrams but thought maybe someone had taken it upon themselves to produce some.

Like Enterprise (the TV series) before it, I wish the new movie had retained a little more of the original series feel. The uniforms were a great update, but the Enterprise (both exterior and interior) seemed a bit off to me. Anyone else? I guess, back to my original post, if I had some sort of feel as to where I am, it would help.

I think I'm unique in that I would have preferred more continuity with the original series or a lot less, but don't like many of the design choices made. It's like the art department found my personal uncanny valley and put the Enterprise and many other artistic choices from the film right there. But I did like the bridge and transporter rooms ... if only they'd rip out so much of the clutter that looks like a rushed afterthought to the otherwise clean design.

Yeah. It looks like a meshing of elements from the Sovereign-class bridge, the Galactica CIC (from the Moore-Eick version) and the Apple Stores' standard design. And the elements of the three influences...not quite all mixed well. Although, it's difficult to say exactly how so.

^ For dew and psion, I strongly suspect that both of you would be largely satisfied if the lighting on the bridge were darkened to something closer to the Kelvin's light levels. That may require a different paint scheme too, but I do believe most people's problem with the bridge is simply a bit of excessive shinyness.

I was thinking the same thing! :techman:

That would help, but I also objected to the idea of lights pointed right at the people operating the consoles. And get rid of the bar code scanners and task lights over the consoles (those consoles emit light, they don't need to be lit up). Finally, get rid of the clear situation displays all over the place. They clutter up the bridge.

With respect to DEWline, I wouldn't liken the new bridge to an Apple store ... I'd compare it to a styling salon. But it's actually a lot cooler than that ... after you pull the extra lighting and greebles.

Agree with everything except for the HUD displays. I like em, but I think they need to be used more often for it to really have an effect.

The main reason I like them is because we have too many times in TOS seen Spock giving reports from his science console as if he was standing right next to it but isn't anywhere near it or looking at it. Take "Corbomite Maneuver" for instance. Kirk asks for a size reading on the Fesarius and Spock--while staring awestruck at the viewscreen--answers, "Readings go off the scale. Must be a mile in diameter." I can totally see that scene working with Spock making a quick backwards glance at one of the HUD panels next to the science station (or standing behind it, looking through it at the viewscreen).

I agree. There are some things that I would like to tweak, such as the lighting, but all in all a very good design.

Perhaps Spock has already taken those readings (from his console screen) and is just reciting them from memory, knowing Kirk would eventually ask for them?
