Patrick Stewart's "star" quality

Duane

Captain
Captain
I don't know why some people have "star" quality while others don't. I have a very clear memory of the first time I saw Patrick Stewart in a movie. It was 'Excalibur' which Wikipedia dates to 1981.

His IMDB listing does not show an appearance (possibly his first role in a movie?) and I think it was a very minor role, but still, when I saw the TNG pilot, I said to myself "that guy was in Excalibur."

I don't know what it is, but Patrick Stewart has it.

Screen presence and a quality of voice that seems to compel you to listen intently to what he is saying - a real asset if your an actor.

I thought it was kinda fitting that after First Contact he went on to play Captain Ahab in a 1998 TV mini-series of Moby Dick. :)

I also loved him in "A Christmas Carol". It's still my favorite version.

I don't think TNG would be nearly as popular and recognized if it weren't for him. It would probably be more like DS9, loved among many trekkies but largely ignored/forgotten by the mainstream.

The strength of Stewart's performance singlehandedly turned some people I know into STNG fans. No doubt this is a wider phenomenon than my own experience.

Same. My mom hates star trek in general but she sits down and watches TNG if she notices Patrick Stewart is on.

My friends who made fun of Star Trek only got into it after I showed them episodes of TNG where Stewart really shined. Now they are big time fans of more than one series of star treks.

The guy is the triple threat: sweet, sexy and talented.

Still one of the hottest men I have ever seen. Wow!

Patrick Stewart was also the only trek actor that had roles worth mentioning after his show ended. :rommie:

Patrick has a star quality that is backed up by ability...I think maybe only Leanord Nimoy compares to him in industry respectability as far as ST acting goes.

Independance Day, and Brent Spiner as "Doctor Weirdo."

:)

Don't forget Dorn in The Santa Clause 2 & 3. Mister Sandman, bring me a dream.....or Burton on Reading Rainbow.

Now if you're talking TNG Trek actors, then yeah, pretty much. But Trek Actors in general, not so much. Nimoy's resume is pretty full. Shatner has done just fine outside of Trek, especially when Kirk and Odo (Rene Auberjonois) met up to do Boston Legal. Bakula currently has a full time gig doing Men Of A Certain Age. I may be missing a few others, but you get the idea. :)

II don't know what it is, but Patrick Stewart has it.

I remember seeing PS at a con at the Royal Albert Hall in London back at the beginning of the 90s. I have a distinct memory of looking at him through the viewfinder of my camera and understanding what the phrase "the camera loves him" means. I've never experienced that with anyone else before or since.

My girlfriend loves TNG more than the others mainly because of Patrick Stewart. He really did a great job.

No doubt Stewart has appeal on many levels. He's a phenomenal actor, he's got distinguished good looks, he's got a sexy accent and he's a freakin knight!

Stewart has star quality, no doubt about it but I wouldn't care to dismiss the job Avery Brooks did on DS9, he was just as good in his role.

Remember, when TNG first hit the airwaves, Patrick Stewart was a relatively unknown celebrity in America. He's mostly known from his stage productions. Levar Burton was by far the most famous cast member in season 1 (Roots, Reading Rainbow).

Patrick is just like able. He does have that stage presence.

He has a funny sense of humor- he was on Saturday Night Live and had a funny appearance in a movie called "Jeffrey".

He has a way of making you interested in things like Shakespeare and classic literature even when before you can barely pay attention to such things for 2 minutes, lol.

I also loved him in "A Christmas Carol". It's still my favorite version.

The play was even better. When I first saw him take the stage, I couldn't help but see him as "Picard" playing some other role. In a few moments that melted away. Stewart was phenomenal. My first and most impressive one-person play experience.

Stewart is an actor's actor. He has a charm about him that all of the others can't match. At times when I've been watching more of the other Star Trek series, my perception of him slips, especially when there's an episode where the other Captain does a stellar performance. But then when I come back to TNG, I remember... yes, Stewart was the best. He is the definitive captain.

Shatner did rather well in T.J. Hooker and Boston Legal. And Walter Koenig was good as the creepy Psi-cop Bester in Babylon 5.

But Patrick Stewart was a bona fide star long before TNG happened.
