W.I.P. - U.S.S. Perseus

Ensign Ro-

Commander
Red Shirt
Hi all. I am working on developing an animated fan production and am currently working on the ship design. The time era for the "series" is post Star Trek VI. The U.S.S. Perseus is a border patrol ship. The saucer is the same diameter as that of the TMP Enterprise. I'm just wondering what my fellow Trekkies think of this design. Bear in mind, it's in its early stages. :-)

Very cool. I liked the 3D front view sketch you had on your DA page. Nice to see it fleshed out.
Off topic, have you done anything more with the Horatio?

Thanks, glad you like it. I hope to truly bring this design to life.

As far as the Horatio is concerned, I'm a little stumped. I love the profile and like the dorsal view, but the fore and aft views leave a bit to be desired, so I've set it aside (very temporarily) to re-think it a bit. Take a look and tell me what you think, Judexavier. I welcome any thoughts. :-)

I'd love to see just a small set of multi-purpose bays that can be either cargo bays or shuttlebays. I love the placement of the deflector & I'd like to see the nacelle pylons centered closer together on top and swept back rather than hanging downwards (ie: Saber-Class.) Upgraded phaser strips and torpedo / probe launcher ports on the tips of the big forward protrusion. Possible (amphibious shuttle) elevator-style launch/recovery platform somewhere on the ventral side. Airlocks, etc.

All very EXCELLENT points. I do plan to have photon tubes in the forward protrusions, airlocks are planned for the saucer and possibly the port and starboard sides of the "lower" hull. The multi-purpose bays and probe launchers are very good ideas. Thank you. And I considered sweeping the pylons back but tried to go for a timely Miranda-class look. However, I will try it out and let you take a look to tell me what you think. Thanks for all the notes. I truly appreciate it. :-)

I took your advice concerning the pylons. I kind of like it, but think it is a bit too reminiscent of a Klingon cruiser. I'm still leaning towards my original design. Any thoughts?

Much better, at least the pylons do have some sort of fuction now. I would delete the saucer entirely and give it a container like (or small half elliptical) section instead. (1 on both sides)

I have to disagree. Removing the saucer would greatly alter what I'm going for in my fanimation. And, like I said in my comment to Trelane, although I somewhat like the changes to the pylons, I think the dorsal view resembles the configuration of a Klingon cruiser too much. I'm still leaning towards my original idea.

It's your ship so go for it! :techman:

I like the original shape of the pylons as seen from above. Their angular shapes better balance the circle of the saucer, IMO.
From the front and back, though, the wannabe engineer in me wonders why such long, unsupported pylons need to be, well, so long and unsupported? :) Anyway to find some use for the space underneath?

You are very correct in pointing out the weakness of the pylons. I was originally liking the visual of the negative space for certain shooting angles. However, I took your advice and solidifies the pylons. They are now a structure connected directly to the saucer section. I have yet to work out exactly what they will house. For now, just for the sake of adding some detail, there is sort of a vented area in the fore view. Maybe I could make some large observation windows...or sensor arrays. The aft view contains aft torpedo launchers with I was originally going to place on each side of the impulse drive. Knowing me, things will continue to change. LOL I truly appreciate all the input to help me flesh out this design. ALL the opinions expressed so far have been very helpful. :-)

I'd fill in the space between the pylons and saucer section with additional decks a-la the Miranda-Class. Space for holodeck(s), ten-forward officers' lounge, personnel quarters, airlocks, jeffries tubes/crawlspaces, brig, sickbay, etc.

Thanks, Trelane. ALL great suggestions. I think some over-sized windows in the fore section could be pretty cool. Maybe a "ten forward" type lounge on on side and an arboretum on the other. :-)

An update...
