ok i just came back from the cinemas and it was great.

much better than i expected, but why wasnt mckay a scientist?

will they be making any more?

what other good sci-fi films came out this year?

Source Code was fantastic, the second film of Moon director Duncan Jones, and probably a lot more accessible. If you're going to watch just one, watch that.

The Adjustment Bureau was good in a Bourne-goes-PKD sort of way. It worked as a thriller but also rather well as a reality-distintegrating Phil Dick yarn.

And I've heard good things about Another Earth and Melancholia, though I've yet to see 'em.

ok thanks bro, i'll check them out

This movie is a real success story...decent reviews, and almost $230 million worldwide on less than a $100 million budget.

RAMA

It really is. It just goes to show you what you can do with a good story.

Not just the less than $100 million dollar budget but it was only written by two screenwriters and not thirty like Cowboys and Aliens.

I'm shocked that it's doing so well considering it only has about 15 minutes of action in the entire thing. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying.

It's word of mouth buoying this movie. I really enjoyed it so I'm happy. I also think there's kind of an subtle counterpoint going on. The movie just feels 'weighty' when compared with lightweight fare like Marvel superheroe movies.

Just got back from watching this. Alot better than i thought it would be. Though the action was way less than i hoped.

Loved how the drug will end up killing most of the people and not the actual apes doing it.

Wonder if we see a part 2.

I finally got to see this today. Good film. I give it an "A." :techman:

In some respects it was more understated than I'd expected and in a good way. Some of the lines (even if they're tip-of-the-hats to the 1968 original film) felt a touch out of place but not terribly.

Interesting that Ceasar not only says "no" to human authority he also says "no" to unwarranted killing...for the most part.

As others have already said this isn't a battle royal for the entire planet---not yet---but merely the initial breakout of the first apes in San Francisco.

I'm definitely looking forward to a sequel.

Cesar's behavior when it came to killing was a nice touch and made a degree of sense. Mostly a "do as I say" sort of rule and at the same time "only kill people who really deserve it."

Glad you liked it Warped. I thought it was a decent movie myself, about the only things I didn't like was that I thought the asshole neighbor was a bit over-the-top in his asshole-ish-ness (like when he freaks out after John Lithgow crashes the car. The neighbor says something like "Look at my car! It's wrecked! How am I supposed to get to work now?!" When the car was still perfectly drivable and not at all very "wrecked."

The love story felt "tacked on" between the main character and the vet was completely un-needed, and I though the sting at the end with the virus spreading should have been made part of the movie rather than happening as the end-credits sequence.

But, all and all, the movie is good.

Unfortunately, it will probably still be a few more years before a motion-capture perfomance is recognized by the Academy.

I actually think the academy was right in not nominating Serkis as a regular actor. Not because I didn't like the performance (I loved it!) but because the animators at Weta are every bit as responsible for the final performance on screen as Serkis is. When you're translating human facial expressions to a chimp's face, there's a lot of room for interpretation, so it'll never be *just* the exact actor's performance on screen.

Now if there was a separate category for performance capture (and/or voice acting), I'd be all for awarding the performance of Serkis *and* the animators.

I've always felt that Serkis should get some kind of special achievement Oscar.
Eh...If they don't create a category for his mo-cap work, he'll probably get some kind of pioneering or Lifetime Achievement Award at some point.

There are still too few mo-cap performances every year for the Academy to create an extra categorys, I think. But a special award would be nice.
