Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2'

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

I'm surprised none of you are suggesting the classic Spirk pairing.
Already been done.

Done so many times... and that's just Temis.

Some things are never gonna happen....sadly.

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

The real question is what is Kirk going to do?

Sleep arond or get a gf?

This is how we get to meet the new Yeoman Rand.

Oh? I sincerely hope so! :techman:

As for Spock's love life falling apart...look, I'm about as unromantic as a guy can get--in real life.

In matters of fiction, however, I absolutely despise writers breaking up previouly successful relationships simply Because They Can. I hated it in TrekLit (SEE: Trill: Unjoined), and I'd hate it if Spock and Uhura break up with no warning signs seen in the previous film.

I really want to see Rand but I'm not sure that I'd be a fan of a pairing with Kirk beyond their usual frisson. We already have one crew pairing and I don't see what they could add with a second one. A few jealous glances to Carol Marcus (like the one she gave Lenore Karidian) would be sufficient in my view! The relationship stuff has to complement the sci fi, not dominate it. I think Quinto is right to suggest that Spock's relationship with Uhura will be tested - duty and logic vs love. Finishing Spiderman 1 with him rejecting MJ left fertile ground for a sequel, whereas resolving the MJ and Venom situation in a rushed manner in Spiderman 3 left barren ground for a sequel (if they'd remained split up for example, it would have left the way open for for a Venom showdown and for the Black Cat to swing in for Spiderman 4). I'd be happy for them to split up in the next movie if they build on it some more in the third sequel.

I think there were warnings, spock did consider leaving star fleet to help rebuild his race. I guess it depends on how you define rebuilding the Vulcan race.
spock may have meant taking a Vulcan wife and having kids or he may have asked uhura to leave star fleet with him and move to Vulcan so both of them can help the Vulcan people, afterall Amanda left earth to be with Sarek...uhura looks like the kind of girl that will abandon everything and anything to be with spock, am not sure I would classify that as a healthy relationship.

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

The current remake of Sherlock Holmes (BBC TV series) is full of a fair bit of gay innuendo, using a similar dynamic as Xena to milk the fan in-jokes. A scene where Quinto scrubs Pine's back in the sonic shower on the morning after is probably taking it too far - although they should totally put that in the outtakes reel for Comic Relief. Maybe Rand can walk in to deliver Kirk's lunch while he's receiving a back massage and mistakenly assume they are a couple. It would be a fun nod to that fan favourite where a yeoman (was it Barrows in Shore Leave?) steps up to give Kirk a muscle massage and when he turns around, he looks almost disappointed that it wasn't Spock.

"Spock, what are you doing back there?"

"Boldly going where no man has gone before"

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

That's a ....weird mental image, right there.

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

Also, Brokeback Mountain was about a tragic lovestory. ST is not.

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

^And didn't Heath Ledger later disown that film, or something?

Ledger was himself supposedly "disowned" by a former costar for having chosen to take on a role in that movie, but the matter has not one thing to do with anything being discussed in this thread, so why raise it here?

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

^I'd imagine the same reason the film was brought up in the first place: Someone thought the trivia was cool to invoke.

However, the point is, I don't see any of the TrekXI actors disowning the film any time soon.

Back to the original point, I think the Spock and Uhura romance is destined to run into problems, but it is highly unlikely that the romance will far completely apart. Spock may be "conflicted" but I don't think that love is something a Vulcan is conflicted about. They either do or they don't.

Romance is an essential part of a movie, because it helps to draw the audience in. It helps us like or dislike a character. You have to admit, the three were more likeable and cheered on when they had a romantic interest. Sadly, towards the end of the TOS movies, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy became rather stodgy, old men.

Re: Zachary Quinto: 'Spock's love life could fall apart in Star Trek 2

^Agreed. McCoy's best ep, I think, was "For The World Is Hollow...", and Kirk's was "The City On The Edge Of Forever".
