A thought about Destiny and its aftermath.

When I was reading Losing The Peace, it suddenly dawned on me that Destiny and it's impact on the "Present Day" Star Trek universe reminded me an awful lot of DC Comics classic Crisis On Infinite Earths.

So I was wondering if that event had been any kind of an influence or inspiration in crafting either the Destiny trilogy proper or in the after effects felt in the novels following it?

Well it's very subtle. But here's what got me thinking about it.

Prior to Crisis, things were fairly static with DC's superhero titles. Oh sure there might be a title here or there that would take some bold chances (kind of similar to the chances that was taken in Treklit with New Frontier) but over all things were played pretty safe.

Then suddenly there was this huge story where all the characters of the DCU crossed over. A story that spanned both worlds and times. A story about an implacable enemy focused on one thing, the total annihilation of our heroes.

Once the story was over a lot of people were dead and the universe in which the stories were set were forever changed.

In the case of Crisis it had a lot bigger character impact. Things like the death of Supergirl. In Destiny (and btw from here on out when I say "Destiny" I'm meaning both the trilogy and the books following it like A Singular Destiny, Losing The Peace, the Typhon Pact novels etc) the effect was seen more sharply on the setting of Trek. Worlds once thought untouchable like Risa, or Vulcan were destroyed or severely damaged, and the make up of the UFP itself has been altered for at least the foreseeable future.

So it's not really a 1:1 ratio kind of thing but more the scope, and also the impact that struck me as being very similar between the two.

Well, I would guess that these things happen in large fictional universes. If an author/editor wants to make some grand sweeping change to the status quo, there's probably only so many ways that can be done given the established complexity of the narrative.

That two of those stories should end up being superficially similar is probably inevitable in those circumstances. It doesn't necessarily mean that one was inspired by the other, and it doesn't necessarily take anything away from either of them either. Just the way these things go.

Right click and copy from the menu instead of dragging over and copy works.

Or just click in the address bar after you get the 403 error and hit enter; in Firefox at least, dunno about other browsers.

It's set to block from outside websites; if you come from the site that it's hosted on you can view it, while if you come from a different site (like trekbbs.com), you can't. When you click in the address bar and hit enter, it sends the graphic's address itself as a referrer. And since the graphic is hosted on the same site as itself, it makes the server think you're coming from the website and loads it correctly.

Copy-and-pasting the address should work the same if you paste it into a new tab or window. That way you send an empty referrer because you're not coming from anywhere, which has the same effect (it has to be configured that way because of browsers that are set to not send referrers at all for privacy reasons, so that they can still get to the graphics).

(This is why I always throw images up on imgur or something, just in case people might have to hassle with something like this. :P)
