Best socks for extreme winter weather?

Well folks, I'm going to move to Russia in a few weeks and need to find some socks for the crazy Russian winter 'cause I'm gonna be there a while. What women's socks are best for the crazywinter temps of Russia? I need some socks that are thin enough to fit under my nice boots. What brand and style should I use?

FYI, it's kinda hard to find nice warm socks in Florida, especially in the summer.

Maybe look for a outdoor sports/hiking supplies store or something, I'm sure there's such a thing even in Florida. I think the boots are more important than the socks to keep your feet warm though.

To the OP: SmartWool is your friend. Very warm, yet not bulky and breathes very well.

I would also say SmartWool. They come in several different weights, but even the thin ones are pretty warm.

Failing that, any wool sock is generally pretty good. Personally, I tend to just stick with cotton socks in the winter as I find them more comfortable, and as long as you're just popping outside for 10-15 minutes and wearing good boots, you'll be fine. You only really need thick socks if you're planning on spending extended periods of time outside, IMO.

I'm not the one to give the best advice for winter. It can be 20 below with 2 feet of snow on the ground, and I'll go outside in shorts.

First.. forget fashion and style when it's -20 degrees celsius outside (or even lower).

Get some good boots that are insulated themselves and then some standard cotton socks.. should be enough for most people but if you still freeze just put on a second pair.

LL Bean. If they don't have a store in your area, they're online. Since their base is in Maine, they have the best winter socks anywhere.

REI needs to be your first stop. The socks I used to buy there when I lived in Alaska were perfect for my move to Russia as well.

No REI's in Florida. Just alot of Bass Pro Shops. If you're in central florida you could try going to Travel Country on state road 436 in altamonte springs. They specialize in camping/hiking gear. I get most of my rough weather apparel there including snow gear.

www.rei-outlet.com is their outlet site. You can find some good deals there. It's last year's colors, overstock, etc. so sizes and selection are spotty.

I work down the street from an REI, which happens to be next door to the local FedEx shop. When I need to mail something for work, I inevitably end up coming back a bit lighter in the wallet for my troubles.

Well, if quality of the garment is not an issue for you, I suppose this is true....

But given who I'm talking to....put it this way: you wouldn't be caught DEAD purchasing garments of any kind of the quality and durability I witnessed in Russia.

Once again....things might have changed somewhat since I lived there....but at the time I was there, Russian-made stuff was utter crap, and stuff made anywhere else was exorbitantly expensive in order to make the Russian nouveau riche feel important because they could afford stuff that was NOT Russian.

I guess I think of this kind of thing as disposable as I sure as hell don't want to be anywhere that cold for any extended period of time.

I have a rabbit-skin Ushanka from Russia. Warmest damn hat I've ever worn. Served me well through one winter, and looking to roast my head through another Wisconsin winter. Quality control in Russia might be starting to come 'round.
