Bay Area Must-Sees

Hey guys, I recently moved to CA and I want to take advantage of the opportunity and experience the area a bit before we have to move again. My allergies don't seem quite as bad, so I'm going to see if I can visit some parks once I get over my cold. Anyone have other suggestions?

I've done some research and have my own list, but I figured there are people here who might have some lesser known suggestions. I've never been here before so I'd love any ideas!

No! That's in SF, right? I haven't been to the city yet, today marks a week of being in CA.

The city is pretty much where's it's at in the Bay Area. A few things I'd recommend:

Take a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Driving is okay, but to really get the scale of the thing (and enjoy the views) it is much better to walk.

See a Giants game at AT&T Park. Even if you aren't a baseball fan, it's still a great experience. A beautiful ballpark with beautiful views.

Drive up to Grizzly Peak on Fish Ranch Road. The peak overlooks SF and the Berkeley area. Here's an example of the view you get.

There are also tour cruises around the bay that can be fun. There's always Fisherman's Wharf on the Embarcadero, which is pretty touristy but has some worthwhile places.

BTW, if you like margarita's, head over to Tommy's Tequila over in the Richmond district on Geary. The food is okay but the margaritas are to this day the bast I've had.

Go to the Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park. If you're lucky enough to be there when it is raining it is a beautiful experience. One of my and my GF's favorite memories.

Taking the drive up to Sausalito across the GG Bridge for the afternoon is a nice drive. It is touristy, but Alcatraz is a very cool experience. Go to the St Francis Hotel on Powell at night and ask about taking the elevator up. It is actually one of the best city views. And I don't know if it is still there or not but go to the top of the BofA building and eat at the restaurant on the top floor. That is if you are not afraid of heights.:)

Hope you have a wonderful time Kestra. I miss the Bay Area.

Welcome to California!! I really hope you enjoy yourself here, though I know that leaving your old life behind is probably very difficult.

I would recommend a day or weekend trip up to gold country, also known as the motherlode. It consists of the foothill region, going down Highway 49 from around Nevada City to Sonora. There are several small towns that have kept up their historic districts, with great little shops, museums, and gold panning in some places. The Empire Mine in Grass Valley is a nice little place to visit, and there is an Indian casino in Jackson that my boyfriend and I enjoy going to every once in a while. There are also some underground mining caverns that you can take tours through on this route, as well as several awesome vineyards. All of this is about 3 hours east of the Bay Area, which is why I suggested a weekend trip if you are really interested in any of this stuff.

In the actual Bay Area, I always enjoy a visit to the Winchester Mystery House. And I'm actually planning on meeting up with some family and taking a ferry into the city to hang out at Fisherman's Wharf soon. I would suggest visiting the Oakland Zoo, as it is my favorite zoo to go to. I'm not exactly sure why, it isn't the biggest one I've been to, but I just really like the atmosphere and way the exhibits look. There is lots of open space for many of the animals to roam in. And they have a sky thing (I cannot remember the term for it right now) where you ride in those buckets in the sky...you get a really awesome view of the bay from up there, and you get to look down on animals.

I would also suggest Mount Diablo State Park, Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, Old Sacramento, Golden Gate Park, seeing a play in the city if that's your thing, and going to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom if you are into theme parks. It is half zoo and half thrill rides, I've been going there practically since I was born so I may be biased, but I think it is a fun place to hang out (try to get discount tickets somewhere though, otherwise it gets expensive).

I'm sure there is tons more that I am not thinking of, but my mind is going blank at the moment. I'm sure you will find lots of stuff to do around here. Have fun!

When I lived there as a kid, Muir Woods and Stinson beach were favorite places--lovely spots and not too long of a drive.

Golden Gate Park is a veritable treasure trove: lovely grounds, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Bison herd (yes, Bison) and the Academy of Science area--Natural Science Museum, Planetarium and the Steinhart Aquarium. I used to freaking LOVE the Aquarium.

Another fun place for an afternoon visit is the Exploratorium. It's a hands-on science museum, and it's NOT just for kids. It's over at the Palace of Fine Arts (which is a lovely place to visit, anyway).

Which is in San Jose, but is still considered the Bay Area. ;)
Other options within painless driving distance (3 hours give or take):

Yosemite
Sequoia National Park
Hearst Castle
Monterey (aquarium)
Santa Cruz (beach with Boardwalk and rides)
Gilroy (annual garlic festival in July)

Try going down to Santa Cruz and taking Highway 9 through Cowell Redwoods State Park on the return trip to San Jose. Very nice drive, as are a lot of the two-lane roads through the Santa Cruz Mountains - just pick one and see where it goes.

Good suggestions everyone! I've heard of some of the parks and I want to go to Santa Cruz, but a lot of the rest is new. I'm actually in San Jose so I'm looking for anything in the whole Bay Area. I've seen the Mystery House but wasn't sure if it was worth visiting.

I'm really looking forward to Golden Gate Park, and I appreciate the suggestion to walk across. If anyone else has ideas, keep them coming!

Oh and my sis lives in SoCal so I'll be down there too, but I don't think I want to go to LA anytime soon. I think I'd only go because it's a major city that's worth experiencing just once, but it doesn't sound like my type of thing.

Also: the weather here is ridiculous!

Ridiculously awesome, right? If you mean that it's hot, it really hasn't even been as hot as usual lately, and San Jose is actually quite nice compared to the temps a little to the east of you.

As for actually visiting the Winchester Mystery House, I love going on tours of historic homes and sites, so I enjoyed it very much. It's also fun to just walk around the grounds after the tour as it is a very beautiful place.

Man i'll never forget the weather i experienced in SF during the 4th of July after i graduated from high school. My family and i were in Fisherman's Wharf and it was seriously in the 40s. Back in LA, it was over 90F.

It's not that it's hot, it's the same every day! Mid to high 70s during the day, drops a little bit at night. Sunny with 0-10% chance of precipitation.

Also I don't think I know where Alameda is so I'll have to look that one up on a map.

I don't know if it's still there, but there was a very cool Penny Arcade in Seacliff in San Francisco when I lived there with pinball machines and lots of classic clockwork machines that still operated for only a penny.

Go to Pancho Villas on 16th at Mission for the best burrito you'll ever have; check out Zante's Indian pizza next door for the culinary genius of the Indian Pizza (no clue why they haven't done that in the UK yet).

I always make a point of going to Japan centre when I'm town to visit relations. The Japanese dollar stores rock!
