Even though TPTB decided to go with a leaders name instead of any warrior of the army the weapons test still comes down to which private dogface had the better technology behind him in most cases. Joan had 400 years of arms and armor improvement as her advantage no matter what intagibles the SEAL and Green Beret added to the program
 
Yeah, it was basically better weapons (almost exact upgrades for the most part with the possible exception of the sword) trumping physical strength. It was the most logical outcome.

BTW, I'll start the question early so we can get some discussion. Who do people think will win next week (North Korean Special Operations Force vs. US Army Rangers).

I can't really see the NKSOF winning, but I've been surprised in the past (Jesse James beating Al Capone still shocks me). Still, we're dealing with modern US military vs. outdated Soviet surplus supplies. Short of the new Red Dawn movie, I don't see this one being close.
 
NK SpecOps is an entire branch of the NK military, consisting of 180,000-200,000 members, the largest so called special operations force in the world.

The US Rangers are a single regiment of less than 5,000 soldiers.

It should not be a contest, the Rangers are one of the most elite light infantry units in the entire world.
 
The only thing that worries me is they seem less elite than the previous elite US forces (Navy Seals and Green Berets).

Well in a way they are since a recruit can join the Army and go straight to the Ranger Regiment after Jump School as a rifleman but he will be kicked out if he doesn't pass Ranger School down the line. They also tend to be younger since they are closer to a light infantry company, many of whose leaders are also Ranger School graduates, then veterans with years of service as secret warriors.
 
according to the Directv guide, tonights episode will be an hour and a half long. i wonder if it has something to do with the episode being 'live'.
 
Basically, they had a live aftermath. The episode itself was normal length.

That result was a lot closer than I'm comfortable with. They don't have any blowouts this year at all.

yeah, every episode this season has been a close match. i guess that is a direct result of the new simulation program. i have a feeling the next episode won't be so close though.

the aftermath was neat though, i kinda wish they would do that for every episode.
 
What was all of this about North Korea knowing the terrain so much better? While the North may send spies over the US Army has been patrolling SOUTH Korea for 60 years.

Which way? Genghis was the greatest conqueror in history, Hannibal was responsible for a victory that inflicted more casualties in a single day than any other in western history (and more casualties than the United States had in the entire Vietnam War). It's hard to bet against the Composite Bow, but I could see it going either way. At least the participants are diverse. Falcta, Elephant, and presumably a sling or javelin vs. composite bows, etc. I could see it being widespread, but I think it'll be close (as opposed to Washington/Napoleon or Rangers/SOF where the techology was very similar).

i'm gonna go with Hannibal. i may be completely wrong, but i think in a one on one battle Hannibal would win. i think there will be a 20% difference in the result. again, i may be completely wrong.
 
It may be, but who knows. Should be fun tonight either way. Plus, regardless of actual military effectiveness, it should be fun to see Elephants.

One preemptory historical anacronism. It appears they are using African Elephants in the field tests. However, this breed of African Elephant wasn't used in war. They either used a smaller Forest Elephant (which is now extinct, so I understand why they won't use it) or Indian Elephants (more common in Greek, Persian, and Middle Eastern armies). I don't think it'll make a huge difference, but something to be concerned about.
 
I am going with genghis kahn on this one he's the only one in history to conqure russia.
 
I figured I couldn't know, but I am disappointed with the results. I'm pissed that they gave generalship to Genghis, but I don't think that was a significant factor in the result.

Anyway, next week is Saddam Hussein vs. Pol Pot. I don't think either was spectacular as a warrior or a general. Still, it might be interesting. Any picks for a winner? I think I'm going with Saddam. I think Pol Pot's success came at a real low point for Cambodia and his hold on power was shorter.
 
Deadliest doesn't usually mean in a genocidal sense, it means who is the better warrior. Ruthlessness might be a factor, but, when it comes to being assholes for the sake of victory, I don't think either shied away from cruelty.
 
Y'all. As entertaining as it is, this show ain't scientific.

How many times have they set up different target arrangements to compare matched weapons?
 
even though i enjoyed Waffes SS VS Viet Cong last season, i just can't get into Saddam Hussein vs. Pol Pot. not sure who i'd pick either.
