America's Attack on the Lemonade Stand

But the North was still better than the South in regards to its treatment of black people. Still is today although the Midwest is now the capital or racism in America. I can't believe anyone would try to defend the South's actions in regards to black people. "They were bad, too" in regards to the North is a childish and useless reply.

So, you're not a Holocaust denier? Finally, we've established a baseline for what you won't fall for.

How are you on 9/11 conspiracies and Moon landings?

There were blacks who fought for the Confederacy, and were not forced to either...I am no conspiracy nut, STOP trying to paint me as one!!
Then why the fuck do you keep ranting about the One World Government and the New World Order? :wtf:

And anyone who says the NWO doesn't exist is probably in on it or just another sadly duped tool of the NWO.

According to your own words in the BR you were reviewing the thread, so after saying that when I saw you single out a word that can and has been misconstrued as a slur and then threaten mod action in a completely serious manner with no indication given of joking (like saying "just kidding" or using a wink smiley), I felt it was important to point out that no, it wasn't a slur and no, we weren't going to take any action, just so everyone was clear. I'd never frame a joke as an actual mod action without making it perfectly clear I was kidding.
Well, deadpan usually works for something that outrageous. I suppose the irony of the context of the actual sentence where the word was used must not be as obvious to you as it was to me.

It did confuse me, RJ. Usually I can tell when you're joking, but this time I definitely wasn't sure.
I'm sorry for the confusion, J. Frankly, I'm a bit hurt that after all these years you would think I'd believe you would say something racist (not to mention you'd think I'm that stupid).

It seemed blindingly clear to me. Locutus knows I'm fluent in English and is familiar with my sense of humor, and nobody in their right mind would accuse J, of all people, of being racist. It's a little surreal that anybody would possibly take something like that seriously.

We live in interesting times.
To say the least.

The issue for me was that the context didn't exist. There was no way for me to know either way. If I would have taken it as a joke and replied as such, it could have put me in dutch if I were mistaken and you were serious.

If, on the other hand, I took it as you being serious, then I was going to wait on a follow-up from you as an explanation. When I received neither, I felt it was best to wait and see what happened.

We joke back and forth a lot, I know this. However, this time around there was no evidence of humor anywhere in the post. It was too straight to be sarcasm, and with no visual or contextual indicator, I couldn't respond properly.

Remember, you are a mod, and sometimes I'll see green before I see the joke, especially if there's no other clue as to whether you're serious or not. The word "niggling" is a fairly common word, but in certain regions of the country, it is apparently a ghastly racial slur (thanks Locutus), and so I was concerned that I actually stepped over the line quite unintentionally.

It doesn't mean you're stupid, it just means in a fast moving thread I didn't pick up on your joke, and I took it seriously, which is generally the right thing to do when a mod makes a straight reprimand on something that may or may not be a racial slur. That's all that means.

Apparently I misjudged my delivery. The possibility of a misunderstanding never occurred to me. If you're ever unsure of something, please contact me by PM or elsewhere.

I can't believe a mod just said he was hurt by a poster not getting his joke. What the hell?

Artichokes and salmon are certainly not kid food. Chicken nuggets, hotdogs, mac & cheese, spaghetti...those are kids foods.
What? What? That's not "kid food", that's crap. (Well, except for spaghetti. But given the condiment you guys probably use, it's still crap. :p)

Thinking you might have misinterpreted a word that can be misconstrued as bigoted in a thread full of bigotry means we think you're stupid now? What the hell, RJ? Not considering you infallible is now a personal insult? People make mistakes, it happens. I made one by misjudging your intent, and in an attempt to clarify for other posters who might be confused, pointed out that it wasn't a slur and no one was getting in trouble. You chose to mock me for it for some reason instead of just correcting the misunderstanding. This should have been over and done with in two posts: you making the correction and me apologizing for the misunderstanding.

I would have just ignored the comment or handled it by PMing you had the "joke" not been in the form of a mod action. And given that we tell people not to argue mod actions in the thread, how many people might have been confused and not said anything?

Kids will try lots of things, though forcing them to eat things can make more trouble than it's worth. That my be why my folks would often encourage eating new things with enticement and by not forcing something if it wasn't liked.

And that was exactly my point. I wasn't talking about forcing kids to eat artichokes or whatever. My point was that giving the opportunity to taste a large variety of different foods regularly usually makes sure kids grow up thinking trying different and new stuff is "normal".

Assuming that there's specific "kids foods" on the other hand will not help there. Cause then the kids will see chicken nuggets as "normal" and artichokes as "weird".

ETA: And what the iguana said of course. We're Italian, expect us to be snobs regarding food. Artichokes are an entirely normal food for Italian kids. Chicken nuggets are not. My mom used to tell me they're made by sweeping the kitchen floor and then squeezing all the crap into form.

My parents were as likely to say you probably won't like it to one of us expressing distaste before trying it, all the while continuing to eat it themselves. That usually got the ball rolling to try something new faster than saying to try it.

To elaborate, even I thought you were serious. And I've never thought you were stupid, we just don't see eye-to-eye on a great many things. :p

But these days it's really hard to tell when someone is seriously offended by something or just kidding. The line between satire and seriousness has been blurred so much I can really believe an otherwise intelligent person would think "niggling" is a racial slur.

Interesting times, indeed.

At least you're not as bad as the French. :p

Yes, for kids there, that sort of food would be normal for kids. Not here though. Different cultures and all that.

Okay, clearly I misjudged how obvious the joke was. And, yes, I felt insulted, but I understand your point. How about we shake hands and forget it?

You're right. In these hypersensitive times, I can see how such a misunderstanding can occur.
