OUTCASTS premire on bbca disscussions and comments

I tuned into the 2nd episode and gave up after about 10 minutes. In theory, it should be an exciting show that demands your attention, but instead deflects it.

Yes, it's plodding and slow. Interesting ideas and production values, as well as acting but it's just really slow.

^ Believe it or not, that does get an explanation in The Final Five comic.

The original Book of Pythia had its corners burned off in an explosion. I gather that it became tradition after this to have books and documents with their corners taken off.

As for Outcasts, I forgot that the second episode was even on.

:guffaw: Thanks for clearing that up for me!

This show feels like a more depressing version of Earth 2. While that show was far from perfect, what it had going for it was that slightly more optimistic pioneering spirit that one would expect from new colonists. Interestingly enough, Earth 2 did feature an episode that jumped ahead about 10 years and showed life in the New Pacifica colony. The flash forward showed that the colony became as grey and depressing as the onenfeatured on Outcasts....which is also set 10 years after the founding of the colony.

Well, I watched the first two episodes today, came to TrekBBS to talk about it, and find out it's already cancelled?

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

I mean seriously....how is that possible? Pretty soon, sci-fi writers are just going to ball up their pilot scripts and throw them directly into the garbage. Just skip all the development and stop raising viewer's hopes for new sci-fi to watch.

Good grief...

:scream:

Well there were 8 episodes produced and aired, so they had a shot. You really can't afford to suck like this show did and expect not to get the axe.

What they needed to do is introduce Eric Mabius' character in the first episode and set him up as a savior for the colony who was well regarded on Earth. All the characters like him. And then just give us a little hint that there's something nasty about him...set up some dramatic tension and let it lure us in, don't just drop everything right in front of us with an ear-shattering clatter, so we get a good look at it and go, "meh."

It's possible because this is a rebroadcast of a show that originally aired in England in February and March of this year. It ran in prime time on BBC One for five weeks, got disappointing ratings, had its last three episodes run late on Sunday nights, and had its cancellation announced the day after its season ended in March.

I guess that's what I get for trying to avoid spoilers...

So is it safe to assume it just stops, rather than having a real ending?

would this show be considered space opera or military science fiction?

episode 3 tonight. I so need my sci fi fix right now...

I don't know. I haven't seen the whole thing yet. Based on what other UK (and usually US) shows these days seem to do, I'd imagine the season's arc probably comes to some kind of climax in the final episode, though that might or might not be a cliffhanger.

I didn't find this one too engaging, and it was actually rather silly in its premise. What, this dissolute loser DJ is the only guy on the whole planet with any mathematical skill? Don't they have computers to deal with this stuff? It was ridiculously contrived, even aside from the astonishing coincidence that the disaster these formulae predicted happened within hours of their analysis.

I did like the depiction of the dust storm itself, though, and the refreshingly realistic portrayal of the static discharges within it. Usually depictions of electrical discharges in SF shows and movies are exaggerated and fanciful, but these felt very credible, showing a level of research that I haven't seen much in evidence from this show so far.

You know its amazing TNG survived given how poor it's early episodes were :)

That was back in the olden days when killer ninja robots forced us all to watch the first season of all TV shows! Thus nothing got cancelled, no matter how awful.

But at what price? The world is a happier place now without killer ninja robots.

That figures.

Not that it's a great show or anything, but I was willing to give it a shot.

Eureka and Warehouse 13 can't start soon enough....

There may be some resolution. Most seasons of Robin Hood rapped up their season arc fairly well. I'm sure there are UK viewers around who have seen all the episodes already and can tell you how the show ends if you want.

What happens with Eric Mabius' character? You can spill the beans in spoiler code, I'm not watching any more episodes anyway.

Not sure where you saw up to, basically he plays his hand to become popular in the colony by pushing some kind of pseudo religion through the rest of the episodes. Then is shown to be in contact with another ship coming from Earth. The people on this ship aren't in favour of the way the colony is being run and are planning on taking over when they land. So Berger starts a coup going and tries a divide and conquer on the current administration, while the other ship is coming in to land.
