World of Warcraft -- Now free to play

Okay, it's only free to play until level 20 which Blizzard is hoping is just enough time to get you sucked into the Treadmill of Doom and start paying, but free is free. I dislike RPGs and especially MMORPGs, but I intend to give this a shot just to see what all the fuss is about. If you haven't tried WoW yet, now's your chance.

Um, the trial version used to cost what? a dollar if you bought the cd. It let you play till level 20 or 2 weeks. whichever came first.

It was 10 day and up to lvl 20 of vanilla content if I understand this right...it will be no time limit and up to lvl 20 with some Burning Crusade content...not all but some? I just got BC last month which I paid what they are asking now...$19.99(?)...I had already owned vanilla...but now you can "own" both for the $19.99 price.

All I really see this as is a non time-based trial. I played the trial and maxed my level before the month was up. I think it was level 20.

Yeah, that's all this is. A replacement from the two week trial to a level 20 trial. However, for people like me who jumps between hobbies often and routinely puts things on hold for weeks or months at a time (it took me over 2 years to beat Tales of Symphonia) this works out great. 14 days is not enough time.

I think it's great. It lets people see EVERY major city, try all the races, all the classes, run around and get sucked in good. After that you can buy WoW + BC for only 20.00. I have already sent out 2 refer a friend invitations to people to try it, hopefully I get a nice mount off at least one of them biting the pillow.

I've found the 10 day deal thing stresses people because they need time off from work or school to feel they had a go at it. This is very cool.

:wtf: Really? People took time off of work to play a video game? I hope that was just exaggeration!

I was about to give this a go when my metered 40gig a month connection saw with horror the size of the initial client download......10gigs.

So that was my foray into WOW.

No they don't take time off work, they just needed a week when they were free enough in the evening and/or it was a 3 day weekend that wasn't taken up by other stuff to do it. Once you have spouse, kids, friends, work all hammering away at your free time a 10 day trial can turn into /played 20 minutes.

I'm actually more surprised by your surprise than I am at people taking off work to play a video game. I used to skip school occasionally to play a great, new game. I took three days off of work when Cataclysm came out so I could hit 85 ASAP.

People blow off work for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes a person just needs a "me" day.

Why not? Some people take time off work to go sleep in a tent in the forest.

btw this is an excellent answer :)

I told a friend I was going to go home because I was scheduled to go on an RP walk in WoW and she replied with.. "why don't you go on a REAL walk?" This was particularly dumb as I don't have a car and walk everywhere so am on "real" walks every single day.

Anyway.. gaming is fun and imaginary landscapes have given me as much enjoyment as real ones. Not everyone is geared that way, obviously.

The level 20 cap kills the offer, I mean a lvl 20 character is near useless and it's best comparable with sex, but never getting to cum or orgasm, sure its still kinda fun but whats the point...
