What are you watching?

The 2008 version of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

For once, I don't get the hate for this movie. Yes, it has today's family-related, crybaby, over-emotional angst (a requirement for storytelling anymore:rolleyes:), and I still believe the 1951 version is the better film, but I also like this one.

I don't "hate" the 2008 version, I just thought it was as good as a 'Hallmark direct to video"-film would be; it had none of the qualities a modern audience have come to expect of a cinematically released film nor any of the eeriness of the 1951 version (and NO humour whatsoever).

Well that right there is my point. Humor and positive messages are NOT something today's audience appriecates. In order to be acceptable, everything must be angst-ridden-daddy-issue-bullshit. This movie has that, but thankfully, it's played down.

You could just post "every Major League Baseball game" one time and leave it at that. I think we all get the point.

The thread is about what we're watching at any given time. So what if in my case it's usually baseball? Am I supposed to keep quiet just because of that?

I'm more of the thought that by sharing what you are watching you are providing encouragement to others to perhaps check out a new show they might not otherwise be exposed to (similar to the idea behind the music thread) or one that was on that they might have forgotten to watch.

Just posting a listing of every baseball game on the air doesn't do that, because the point has been established the first 30 times you mentioned a baseball game. It's not a TV Guide.

Plus, as said, we know by now that you're watching every baseball game. What's the point in informing everyone of that again and again and again?

You can watch whatever the hell you like. The fact you post the exact same things in the equivalent AL thread, at close enough to the same times, means it borders on spam. You might take that into consideration, if nothing else.

Still watching Kubrick -and having to pause it all the time to post something here isn't helping any; whenever I look away from the screen a couple of seconds I miss something important!

I'll have to stay on the film for the next couple of minutes though; the "Open the pod bay doors, Hal"-scene is coming up and I don't want to interrupt that for any reason whatsoever!

BTW: did you know that the song Hal sings was first synthesized in 1961 on an IBM 7094 computer - that's seven years before Kubrick has Hal sing it -not only was he a genius, he also had humour!

Meh, trekkiedane... shame I didn't see this earlier. I'd have come over with some popcorn.

It's a great movie.

Ah. I see what you're saying. OK, I'll be more careful on that point.

Apocalypse Now is a great movie, Citizen Kane is a great movie, The Godfather is a great movie....

2001: A Space Odyssey is in a league of its own that makes great movies seem like in-flight entertainment :vulcan:

And now for something completely different: I don't think I have the energy to watch all four hours of it right now -but I'm about to put on Cleopatra (yes, of course the Taylor/Burton one!).
