Hi I am just getting into star trek :P my girl friend is a geek in this and I want to be able to talk to her about the show without sounding dumb. My question is where do I begin :S

Thanks,
Qasvortex

With "Star Trek 09" would be your best bet to get her intrigued by the franchise. If she enjoys that, try watching some Star Trek: The Next Generation with her.

DS9 and TOS may be a bit overkill, after TNG I'd try Voyager.

If I'm not totally misreading the OP, he is the newbie and his girlfriend is the Trekkie.

So I would say he should start with her favorite series.

^Hey, I believe the OP said he's the one that has to get into Trek, not his gf. :P

Start with the Wikipedia page. Lol. Just kidding. :P

Considering Star trek is primarily a franchise of series, you should watch at least one of them. There's five series to choose from, so I don't know which one to recommend first, probably try to find out which one is her favorite and start with that. Personally, I'd recommend TNG or DS9. :P

TOS is the original, but a bit old now, VOY and ENT are okay, but usually not considered the best of Trek, so probably start with TNG or DS9, and considering DS9, even though is my personal favorite, is a bit of an atypical Trek, I recommend TNG. Be patient in the beginning, it took a while for the show to take off in quality though.

Edit: Defcon bit me to it.

I think this belongs over in General Trek Discussion, not QSF.

Yeah I'd agree with seeing which series she likes, and watching that. Watch it with her, so she can share her interest with you and point out what she likes.

Unless it's Voyager or Enterprise. Then just dump her.

;)

Gotta disagree. Voyager's not bad, but I can't imagine why why anyone would watch it before TOS or DS9. To each their own, I suppose. TOS will always be STAR TREK to me.

But, seriously, if the OP wants a crash course in TREK, why not start with the movies before moving on to the tv series?

Although he might want to start with KHAN and save the first movie for later . . .

How old are you?

For younger viewers, I might even recommend ST09 followed by ENT seasons 3 and 4, then the older series.

I know many of the longtime fans have strong opinions about ENT's value relative to the other series, but it just looks a lot more like TV someone under the age of 30 is familiar with, and if you haven't seen the rest of the franchise it will seem pretty fresh.

It's not necessarily about finding the best Trek, just the most easily watchable. It's hard enough having to transition into all of the technobabble without also having to adjust to TV with different pacing and storytelling conventions than you're used to.

As others have said, if at all possible, just watch it with your girlfriend and make it a shared interest. Tell her that you are interested in her showing it to you. Almost all geeks love sharing their interests with others. She'll be all over you.

If Star Trek is something you want to wade into on your own, find some top ten lists for each series and watch a few off each list. This will give you a good reading of what series you want to watch and what you can save until later. Watching the Star Trek Films would be a great start too. (2-4, 6, and First Contact are the popular ones)

Watch ST09...and get a thorough and heavily caricatured misrepresentation of Trek's origins.

Sometimes you just gotta accept that you can't go home. I love Star Trek: The Original Series but have accepted the fact there will never be another series like it. People simply look for different things in their entertainment now versus the 60's.

I think Star Trek 2009 has a list of issues too long to mention here. But I did like the cast and did enjoy some of the interpersonal moments the film presented. So my hope is that now they're past telling the origin story and shoehorning in the connections to the Prime universe that they'll give us something smart and compelling.

I can dream...

Or watch the new movie because it captures the zest and fun of the original series--and is the future of the franchise for the forseeable future.

(But we probably shouldn't let this thread turn into another endless debate about pros and cons of the reboot.)

Getting back to original topic, I find that STAR TREK IV (aka "the one with the whales") is probably the most accessible to people who are just getting into TREK . . . .

If you can hold off long enough, I feel that The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan should not be viewed until you have seen the original series. To get the most impact out of them.

ok im confused, isnt there like an order in which I should view them ? shes basically watched everything thats all she talks about, when we have arguments she even references things from star trek and im left with a wtf expression :P I'd like to watch everything (except for the oldies because I dont particularly enjoy old series). But I want to know the order in which I need to watch Star Trek (the lot of it excluding the old series) I probably sound like a n00b. The only thing I have watched is the newest Star Trek movie.

The production order was:

(TOS) - Next Generation - Deep Space Nine - Voyager - Enterprise

But when you're going for chronological in-universe order it's:

Enterprise - (TOS) - Next Generation - Deep Space Nine - Voyager

The 24th Century series overlap somewhat timewise, though. But in the end it doesn't matter that much as there's little interaction between the different series.

Depends, You can go "in universe" chronological and start go: Enterprise-The TOS movies-TNG-The TNG movies-DS9-Voyager. Or go production order-The TOS movies-TNG-DS9-Voyager-TNG movies-Enterprise. Though the various movies do come out during the runs of TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

That is your opinion,

You are a TOS purist and we all accept that, but I don't think its fair to say that ST09 is a "misreprensentation of Trek's origins". For starters it is a reboot set in an alternate universe that doesn't interefere with the original universe in terms of established continunity. It stays true to the characterisation for the most part (you can't expect a recast actor to fully mimic their predecessor) and captures the tones of the original 60's show.

I would say ST09 is the most accessible movie for any new fan, it has a Hollywood big budget feel and contains so many elements borrowed and reapplied to ST09 from TOS. Chris Pine did an amazing job as Kirk, he captured the basic essence of the character and added his own twist to it. Zachary Quinto, a noted Trek fan stayed as true to the Spock character as he possibly could. His performance mirrored that of Leonard Nimoy's Spock in such episodes as "The Galileo Seven", "Balance Of Terror" and "The Doomsday Machine" (which are among those episodes regarded this "best" of the series).

You get the best of both worlds with ST09. The only gripe I have with the movie is that it seemed slightly rushed in places.

And, to be honest, most of the shows weren't all that serialized so it doesn't matter too much what order you watch them in. (DS9 is the exception here. It evolved into much more of a continuing saga, with plenty of recurring plotlines and characters.)

TOS can be watched in almost any order, although pretty much of all of the classic eps are in the first two seasons.

With TNG, be aware that it doesn't get consistently good until the third season--and the first season is pretty dire. I wouldn't start there.

oh ok so its kind of like final fantasy the game :P its confusing where it starts and finishes but the games dont have much link with each other. Im thinking of starting with Enterprise like most of you guys suggested and then work my way up from there.

Thank you all :) :) your help is much appreciated

I admit this pains me. If you'll indulge me, let me urge you to give the original series a chance. That's where it all began and it remains, for some of us, the essence of STAR TREK.

Everything else, no matter how worthwhile, are spin-offs.
