Airing Star Trek on the CW Philly

So back in November 2009, the CW Philly television station aired Star Trek: Generations, which was really interesting because when that channel was WGBS Studio 57, it used to air that movie and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, as well as the franchise's feature movies pre Generations. But now this channel doesn't air Star Trek like it used to.

So, I did a little search on the internet... and learned that the CW Philly channel has been airing Star Trek: TNG! As soon as I learned about this, I started waking up in the middle of the night to watch it as they had been showing it at 3am.

I did wake up early enough to watch the episode but I was tired and wanted to go back to bed, so I just watched the scene with Troi watching the ship. She was cold so she kept turning up the temperature, but Worf was complaining she was making it too hot. Then after turning the temperature back up, she left, telling everybody she's taking a bath. Then, I turned off the TV to go back to bed.

I tried to keep this up and watch the future episodes I was interested in but my mom yelled at me for my cell phone going off in the middle of the night (my cell phone acts as my alarm clock).

So, for the people who don't live in or near Philadelphia, your channel might be something else but it should or might be airing TNG at 3am.

I did send my television station e-mails about this. From what I learned, according to the e-mail I got from them, they signed a contract with Paramount giving them permission to air the series. They had been airing TNG for two years now but come September, their contract is up and they have to stop airing the show. Right now, at the time I posted this, Channel 57 is on Season 5 called... "Dartmot" or something like that that's airing tonight? According to IMDB, it's airing tonight at 4am but it usually airs at 3? Screw-up? Change in schedule? Whatev...

I wonder, since they are on Season 5 now, and they have to quit airing it in September, and TNG airs weeknights at 3am, I wonder if they will make it to Season 7 one more time. I wanna see "Masks" come on at 3 in the morning.

There IS another channel that's airing TNG, the same episodes and the same seasons as UPN is on. It's some WGNAMER channel I'm not sure I even have on my converter box. I wonder what their contract is like with their airing stations.

I'm sure that audience interest plays a role in it. So, if say enough people were interested, is there a chance the UPN stations would get their contracts extended via Paramount so that they can air TNG past this coming September?

And mods, if this thread belongs elsewhere, in another forum, I apologize in advance.

Well, If my calculations are correct, if they air the episodes in order, Masks will be on the morning of September 28th. That's assuming that they go to the end of September. However, I'm not sure the episodes are being shown in order because the episode about Troi going to take a bath is a season 7 episode called Genesis, and Darmok is a fifth season episode.
Try looking for the episodes on DVD. You could probably get them used fairly inexpensively.

WGN America is just WGN out of Chicago. It's been on the basic cable tier in these parts since at least the early 80's. It's the station that carries Cubs baseball.

Just buy the DVD's, it's easier that way and the episodes are at your fingertips.

So I learned that WGN is a cable channel that's not on the converter boxes... DANG!

I'm certain they are airing the episodes in order. The night I woke up to watch Genesis, I stayed up the following night and Journey's End was on. Both channels air the TNG episodes in production order.

I know there is the option of just buying the TNG DVDs. However as with watching them on TV vs. getting the DVDs, there are pros and cons. It's just so special to watch the episodes on TV, especially the episodes I love.

You quickly get over that when your able to watch them at your leisure in far better quality.

TNG is streaming on Netflix now, so no need to wait until 3 am of BBC America. I was getting tired of BBCA showing what seems like the same dozen episodes, too. Is it me or do seasons 1 and 2 not seem to be in anyone's syndication rotation? My husband is loving this streaming from the beginning now that he can see all the episodes in order, rather than 'Phases' over and over again.

That is good news for sure...

The early morning TNG reruns have been a pleasant constant in over the past few years during my night shift work. Preferred the original line up of last year, South Park at 1:30, TNG at 2:00 and Cosby Show from 3:00-4:00. As of Sept or so TNG was moved to 3:00. It will be a pity when TNG reruns end in September on CW Philly.

TNG is also on SyFy. Between SyFy and BBCA, I'm sure that's why CBS won't renew the contract with WPSG. Incidentally WPSG is the current name of WGBS, calling it CW Philly may describe the station, but the fact that WPSG is a CW affiliate has nothing to do with it airing TNG at 3AM.

Netflix is your friend. :)

*hopes that CW Philly airing station renews the contract with CBS so they can air the TNG episodes past September*

Agreed netlfix is so much nicer, no commericials or editing, complete credits, proper viewing order, and now my husband is watching TOS, too. Voyager is also available. I'm not sure why they are delaying DS9 until September.

No need to bother with BBCA or CW anymore!

So DS9 is taking TNG's place in September?

Umm...no one said that. DS9 is probably delayed until September because of an exclusive contract with Spike or something like that. Without knowing the details of the netflix contract it's impossible to speculate on what WPSG will do, but it's possible CBS will not license anything to them and the 3am slot will be filled with some non-Trek show.

Is this thread from 1992? With so many ways to view content, as others have said, DVD, netflix, downloads, even DVR or how about VCR, who/why is anyone staying up till 3am to hope a TNG episode is on?

Some of us are just up at 3 a.m. writing magical things in the bewitching hour and need something to watch :)

Yes, you young folks today take having to sit down and watch a show whenever the television network chooses to air it for granted, don't you? It's shocking how we surviving so long with such enforced scheduling! I used to watch The Original Series in black an white on a 10 inch fuzzy television- and that was when the antenna and channel decided to cooperate. My husband has also been watching TOS on netflix and he says it still looks hokey despite being remastered. I think it's the bees knees looking as magical as it does! :techman:

Umm... I never said anyone said that. I just assumed something from what someone said so get your facts straight before you set someone straight. Thank you.

Bump...

I just want to let the interested know that I received an e-mail from my local CW Philly television station saying their last night airing TNG will be on September 9 with their final episodes airing being "Gambit 1 and 2".

Also, I wonder if Star Trek Generations will air in November. It did last November but I only saw the scenes from Picard finding himself with Guinan and his family at Christmas on. I didn't see the Enterprise crash scene.

I know people are going to tell me to just buy or rent the DVD but I wanna see the movie on TV because fisrt of all, it's free! And secondly, not that this is the only other reason but I wonder what Data said in the edited version of when he first saw the saucer is about to crash into Veridian 3...:p

It's usually less than five bucks. They just cut "shit" completely out in the televised version. Data says "oh..." and then it cuts to the viewscreen.
