Man robs bank for $1.00 to get healthcare

GASTONIA, N.C. (PIX11)—
A man in Gaston County, N.C., was jailed after holding up a bank for $1 -- but the crime was all part of a larger plan, according to the robber.

Richard James Verone is 59 and was unemployed with multiple health issues before the crime. Varone says he robbed the RBC bank in order to go to prison and get treatment -- he said it was the only way he could get healthcare.

That is a wild story. Being in prison would he automatically receive a full, paid medical checkup and treatment? Seems that this is not a violent man, but a desperate one. I wonder how the courts will handle this this...

They should just fine his ass and send him home. No need to REWARD the guy. :rommie:

This is a sad story and emblematic of what's wrong with health care in the US. This man in order to get health care would have to wait until his condition declines into a emergency situation in order to get any but is ineligible to receive any preventative care being just 'sick' but not critically so.

I have to wonder though if he availed himself of all possible free sources of health care that are availble to people in his position. I've known people in similar circumstances that have been able to get free treatment at a local university medical facility.

Also Catholic Hospitals will also often treat indigent patients for free as well.

People do all sorts of wild things when they are desperate. A little compassion goes a long way.

Just recently there's been news articles of men in prison who castrate themself in order to try to get the prison medical system to give them the gender change surgery. They are so desperate to become female.

What's most unfortunate though, is the prison system's medical system mostly triages care, so unless you need treatment for something life threatening, you go to the bottom of the list. Also pain medication is heavily monitored, the most you can usually get is an aspirin.

I would say the story is a sad indicement of the US health care system (or lack thereof), the question then becomes why are certain people in the US against some form of National Health Care System.

We are lead to believe that National Health care will eventually involve rationing. We have heard anecdotes about waiting lists in Canada and GB for basic medical care.

And the stereotype of bad teeth and the British came from some where. ;)

Define basic medical care?, If I need a transplant it would be covered by the NHS, If i need brain surgery it would be covered by the NHS.

So it's not exactly basic medical care, yes sometimes there are waiting lists, but what about all the millions of people in the states taht can't afford medical insurance?

You can still go private in the UK, and be seen quicker etc.. but everyone in the UK gets medical cover regardless of ability to pay.

Because it's something the Communists would do! :klingon:

Speaking as someone who did a lot of work in the prison system for quite a while, I can say that the medical care one receives in prison is pretty abysmal. I mean, let's face it - the best physicians and medical care providers are not exactly lining up to work in the prisons. And prisoners do not receive treatment for anything unless it is serious - I have seen prisoners go for months with painful toothaches and not get any care whatever. Ditto things like backaches, terrible headaches, or other situations that can be very painful and/or lead to more serious problems if left unchecked/untreated...but are not 'sickness' in the sense of a high fever or immediately life threatening contagious illness.

For this guy to rob a bank in order to receive that level of health care, he'd have to be pretty desperate.

Now granted, most of my experience is in the state prison system and since this guy robbed a bank, he'd fall into the federal prison system...but I can't imagine that would be much better. In fact, I'd imagine it would be worse.

That must be one desperate dude.

But is indicative of the direction of this country. One more step in our march toward the 1% of the population having everything...and the rest of us having nothing. Give us 30 years with our existing mindset of greed trumps all, and we will be a 3rd world country, at the rate we are going. A country where going to prison might be viewed by some as better than living on the street.

It'll discourage other people from trying to do the same thing. This guy should have done something else instead of trying to rip off the taxpayers.

You know what else would discourage people from robbing banks to get health care? Ensuring that everyone had access to health care!

If he needed a colonoscopy, I wonder if he would let himself be abducted by aliens.

Just offer him a full body examination and say its part of the health care "benefits" of the US legal system.

Is it too late to blame this on Obama?

(I kid, I kid)

I'm curious...does anyone CARE that there are free or low-cost clinics all over Gaston County available to treat this man? How about the fact that NC requires the state to subsidize treatment for indigent citizens who have cancer or are even SUSPECTED of having cancer (like, for instance, a growth in the chest)?

Does it bother you that this man didn't use these resources before deciding to game the system?
