TrekBBS vs. the Music

1. Play Me Another One by The Breakmen
Nice country/folkish music. I do not listen so much this type of music, though I do not dislike it either.
Very nice, smooth melody and the song is generally very relaxing to listen to. Lyrics aint bad at all, though nothing revolutionary. The singer has perfect voice for this type of music, so he is in a right type of genre, IMHO.
This would be good for listening live in some good steak place with good drink and company.

2. Ashes - Explode (Makes My Head)
Never heard of this Ashes before, but mostly a positive suprise. The song turned out to be more melodic than I expected, though it would be more heavy from the start, but that is all good. The chorus works well. Good, because it makes most of the song.
The singer seems talented enough, though I got somehow the feeling that her voice was overly mixed, maybe on purpose. I could be wrong, though.
The video was pretty standard, though I liked the red glittery lips and the headphones where cool.

3. Rheostatics - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
This was fine, though I found it bit too relaxed at some points(!?) Did not capture me so much as it could have maybe. Improved towards the end a lot though.
Not badly sung..and I liked much the guitar solos/parts much.

1. Vanessa Amorosi "Absolutely Everybody"

Never heard before. Sounds like dance/pop. No too bad. C Average/Ok.

2. Tina Arena "Show Me Heaven"

Never heard before. Adult contemporary?...nice. B Good.

3. Elena Gheorghe "Midnight Sun"

Never heard before. Sounds like dance/pop. This is kinda bad...voice tuner thing...ugh...it is catchy. F Horrible.

Timbaland featuring Magoo - Luv 2 Luv U
Well, I'm familiar with Timbaland, and I quite like this kind of style, seeing it sounds similar to some Gorilaz songs. Does it sample something in here? Anyway, it's quite good, but it even though I said earlier it sounded a bit like Gorillaz, it sounds more like one of their album tracks that I might choose to skip. Still, it's fairly catchy. 7/10

Foo Fighters - My Hero
I've actually got a borrowed-ripped Foo Fighters album, but I've barely listened to it, and the only one I really know is their first single- rope. This one is nice, and easily listenable. I think it sounds very much like a predictable Foo Fighters track, but like I said earlier, I haven't listened to them much, so I'm not bored by this. I like the lyrics. 8/10

The Pretty Reckless - Miss Nothing
Well, I haven't really heard much of this artist, but I definately know this song, and I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere even another one actually- "Make me wanna Die". I really like this, especially when it reaches climax at the chorus, then the part "So I'll waste my time..." is very satifying to hear, if you know what I mean. 9/10

I'll keep it alive...

"The Writer" - Ellie Goulding

Kind of breathy, female piano-pop. It's pretty nice, though it's a bit overproduced for my tastes. I can't help but feel like this would work a little better in a more stripped-down, acoustic form than how it's presented here. I like her voice, too, it really keeps the song from getting away into something too schmaltzy. 7/10

"Sing" - My Chemical Romance

Heard this one a few times before, I think it's played quite a bit. I honestly didn't know it was MCR, though, they're not really a band I listen to a lot. It's not a bad song, but it's never been one that really sticks with me for some reason. I couldn't quite tell you why, but it's one of those songs I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to. All of that said, the bridge is great, and makes me bump this song up an extra point. 7/10

"Finish Line" - Yasmin

I shouldn't have complained about the first one being overproduced until I got to this one. ;) This is my big problem with modern pop music, I think... there's often a decent core of a song, or an artist with a pretty good voice, but it seems to get lost between the recording studio and the radio. I just have trouble getting in to this song, as it seems to be trying to use way too many tricks to get it to stand out as a pop song. It's not offensive, but it just never comes together for me. 5/10

Walk Away - (Gary?) Barlow
Well, I don't know whether this really is Gary Barlow from Take That, but all other videos just say 'Barlow'.. it doesn't mention anything on wiki, so I'll assume not. Anyways, I really like it. The video is a bit random, but that doesn't really matter :p. This is actually really good, I'm going to look up some more of his I think. 9/10

Coeur de Pirate - Comme des enfants'
Oooh, it's in french. It's fun having songs in other languages, I only have one or two, but it's quite fun when you have no idea what they're saying. It's very nice, and fairly relaxing. 8/10

Weighty Ghost - Wintersleep
Repeatative, but easy listening. Not something I'd necessarily buy, just something I wouldn't switch on the radio. I like the constant instrumental underneath it, and the vocals are good, so this gets a 7/10.

1. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Not bad, though maybe not my favorite. It is nice to listen though...but gets alive better towards the end.
Nice guitar(s) again. Fleetwood Mac is ofcourse a classic but I think they have other, better songs than this.

2. Katy B - Easy Please Me
Never heard of herd of her..but she has a good voice.
Someone might say that the songs melody is bit of like a broken record..but it gives more emphasis to the lyrics of the song(that are nicely honest and about something) and I think that is positive.

3.Owl City - Deer in The Headlights
Some more up beat with a very nice sounds/melody.
Good chorus also. This one has really excellent and amusing lyrics. Also well performed singer wise. I liked this maybe the best of the three.

Rosa - La Esencia De Tu Voz
Spanish now! Fun! I like the title when translated - "The Essence of Your Voice." Other than that I have no idea what she's saying... the spanish lessons didn't help much :borg:. Anyways, it's fun :). 8/10

Yohanna - Is It True
This one really is a beauty. She has a very nice voice, and the song has a good solid theme, true, often used, but I really could listen to this one over and over. 9/10

Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe
I usually strongly dislike most country... but I KNOW this. I don't know how, but I do. I think it's a classic, so I'm going to give this a: 7/10

Sorry I've not been participating much. I think the sad thing is I'm running low on music to contribute. It's fun listening to others, though. I'll give it another shot.

Send the Pain Below - Chevelle
I liked this song back when I first heard it. But I think I was also 12. Chevelle's style can be fairly depressing. It's sort of melodramatic, quiet singing mixed with passionate, anthemic choruses. Still, I think it does a decent job. I like the bridge/break in the middle. 3/5.

The Dope Show - Marilyn Manson
OK, Manson pushes things. I'm OK with listening to them, but only in extremely limited doses. I think this is one of his better songs. Really creepy and weird. Catchy industrial in the background. Still, I feel like I need to take a shower now. 3/5.

Diamond Eyes - Shinedown
Shinedown almost seems clensing after Manson. Really catchy riff when it begins. That being said, this is very different than most of their songs and I'm not sure I like it. It seems like it's trying to scream "fun and catchy!" but isn't quite hitting their mark (it has an almost Trapped feel to it, I can't think of another band off the top of my head that sounds like this). Their songs usually have a bit more atmosphere than this. 2/5.

I'll try to keep participating in this thread now. Here are a couple songs from the bottom of the barrel.

1. Santiagold and Karen O "Go"
This reminds me, at times, of a song called 99 Luft Balloons.
Not a bad thing that. Certainly interesting music.
Bit messy at parts towards the end but at least they are not just screaming to the mics. Lyrics are pretty wild.

2. Alice In Chains - Got Me Wrong
Can I call this melodic rock music?
Not bad..but I was somehow missing more action to this one.
Generally well performed, though..nice base/guitars and lyrics are ok. I cant really say what is missing from this..maybe its just not gripping enough for me.

3. Adele - Rolling in the Deep!
I liked this one the most of the three.
There is something very familiar about this..I must have heard this before.Good chorus and vocals. Nicely melodic with good energy. This singer Adele seems talented vocally. Nice.

Анна Семенович - Дам, дам (режиссёрская версия)
Anna Semenovich - Ladies, Ladies

Despite the fact I can barely read the title, the song is fun, and would put anyone in a good mood. Who cares if you have no idea what they're saying? It's sometimes better that way. 7/10

Mary Fahl - Going Home

This song sounds fairly emotional, (she looks nice ;)). It surprised me that her voice was so low, but it's still beautiful, and I would listen to this quite a lot. 8/10

Tina Arena - I Need Your Body

The song title instantly puts me off, because this kind of theme "Losing Control" Or "Needing bodies" is so overused, and not particularly enjoyable. However, I like the sound of the song, even if I don't like much of the lyrics. This is when another language would be very useful . 6.5/10

Carrie Mac - Till I See You Again
I think this song is kinda obnoxious and generic. The "Till I See You Again uh uh uh" is really grating. 1/5

Shell - Barbie Girl
Definitely an improvement to the first song. Very catchy. I like the accompaniment even if it's synthetic. 3/5

Coldplay - Fix You
I have a soft spot for this song. It seems to be too typical of Coldplay (off of X&Y, which wasn't a spectacular album). But the soft vocals are touching. The guitar solo in the middle is quite cool and works as a good contrast. 4/5

Really hard to find three more songs.

Been... wayy too long since I participated in this thread. :alienblush:

Radiohead - National Anthem
I like the long opening on this one. There's some very interesting, strange but not too bizarre, going on behind the guitar and drums throughout. The singing's a little too.. I'm not sure how to describe it, almost like a trumpet talking, it sounds kinda brassy. Then it gets weird. It's not terribly melodic, but the song overall is more an experience than something you listen to in the background. Layers are added throughout, with the guitar almost drowned out by the actual brass instruments that are playing. I could see how somebody might classify the whole thing as incoherent noise, but it somehow mostly works for me, as though Pink Floyd decided to procreate with a marching band. I'm really not familiar with Radiohead; is this pretty typical of them? Give it a... 7/10. The strangeness does lose a point for me.

The Vines - Highly Evolved
Much more traditional song here. The instruments are done well, the singing is a bit... blandly loud, if that makes sense. Nothing really stands out about it for me and it's rather short though. It's definitely not bad and I enjoy it, but it almost soundsas if the Sex Bob-ombs from Scott Pilgrim crossed over into the real world, with nothing making them stand out from the scene. I don't know why in this case it's a problem, but this song just isn't clicking, so 6/10.

Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - Ohio
Ohhh... thank you. Thank you thank you. I really do think this is one of the true greats, from a great collection of musicians. This is music doing what it does best, stirring the heartstrings and putting a voice to pain and tragedy. The music is a good, steady folk rock... but overlaid with a pall of sadness, and the voices are quiet, never screaming, but not backing down from letting people know that this should not have happened. One of the YouTube comments is "classic moment in rock history right here"... and yeah, I agree. Easy 10/10.

Gorden Lightfoot - Sundown
Relaxing, but if it was on in the background, I'd just forget it. It's like a song that's just there, but it makes almost no difference until it goes. Saying that, it sounds nice, and is in similar style to some things I do like. 6/10

The Sound Of Music - Edelweiss (Julie Andrews & Christopher Plummer)
I think it'd be a crime not to know this one. I've been to Austria, and I really loved it there. It's one of the greatest songs from that film.
I'm also part German, and I like the sound of the title
9/10

The Band Perry - If I Die Young
Wow... I sort of recongnise of this. I might vaguely know of either the song or other songs from this artist. It's beautiful. A bit of country, but not at all overdone, it sounds a bit like Taylor Swift (Which is good for me, because I love her). The chorus is just amazing, and the rest of the song is a perfect build up towards it.
10/10

It's not country, and it's not a classic. The traditional song might be considered a classic, but this steaming pile of maneure is not. It's cheap, thoughtless, throwaway crap of the most detestable kind.

Quite possibly. I don't exactly love it, and I wouldn't listen to it very often. The fact that I know it and don't hate it is the only reason I gave it a 7/10, and it's easy to see how it can be extremely annoying.
