Green Lantern (2011)

Here's a cute one:

It’s time to save Ryan Reynolds from the comic-book blockbuster or, more broadly, from the kinds of movies that are supposed to turn young men into stars, without really allowing them to be actors. Reynolds is almost good enough to stand up to the gargantuan tower of emptiness that is Green Lantern, but he’s fighting a losing battle.

You look through the user comments on a lot of movie sites like Movieline or Deadline - not geek/comic/sf sites - and there is a running theme of "Reynolds/Lively are slumming doing a big FX movie but their careers won't be hurt." It's looking through the other end of the telescope and realizing that for all the nerd bashing, many actors have bigger ands stronger fan followings than the fanboise understand. Portman's in the situation.

The way the reviews are being written, it looks like the director is going to be the fall guy - well unless it's another transformers and critic proof...

Yeah, no one is much jumping to Campbell's defense, are they? I remember people saying that he was "big enough" that other people were going to get the blame. Maybe not.

Lively is very well thought of in general; her star is definitely on the rise. She'll be fine.

She's one of the things I'm looking forward to about GL. Tomorrow evening! :)

I feel sorry for Reynolds. It must break your heart when you give the performance of your career and it's in a piece of shit movie. Hopefully for GL2 they'll get a better director and writer.

I don't feel sorry for Reynolds. I feel like for YEARS Studios have been trying to convince the public he's the next big thing. He might be a nice guy, but... he's just sorta bland and generic, to me. He's lacking a star quality.

I rarely go to theaters, so wouldn't be seeing this in the theater, even if it was getting rave reviews (I think since 2001 only the HP movies, Dawn of the Dead, ST 2009, and Stepford Wives Remake), but, I'm still looking forward to when this comes out on DVD.

He's got a wider range, then I think many people realize. He was great at slowly changing and becoming creepy/evil in the Amittyville remake, he's got comedies galore, he was recently critically appraised for another dramatic part.

You're wrong.

I dunno. He's been given a lot of chances to break out and I haven't seen it. I dont think Green Lantern is going to do it for him either. I just dont think its good casting. His body looks the part but his face and...Reynolds-ishness doesn't match what I know of GL. Which isn't much. All I know about Green Lantern is what I seen on Justice League and read about in Kingdom Come - and there was some cartoon movie.

Exactly.

That's okay, because I do.

Hal Jordan is suppose to be bland and generic. They use to make fun of it when Green Lantern teamed up Green Arrow.

Yeah. That's not a good argument. You don't want a bland and generic lead in an action movie. Can you think of a successful movie with a bland and generic lead? Besides, I never thought of Hal as bland or generic. You know who was bland and generic? Barry Allen.

And who's they? I thought GL teamed up with GA because he didn't know "America" or some shit.

I never had much of an opinion about him before, but I was REALLY blown away by his peformance in Buried. That entire movie was just him in a coffin, and he sold every minute of it.

I admit though he doesn't seem like the best fit for Hal Jordan.

Every action movie since the movie studios started using CGI.

Exactly, GL was the ultimate square and that's why they teamed him up with the loud and proud Green Arrow.

I like this review from 'groucho reviews':

On brightest screen, in threest-D, It's the latest franchisee! This superhero's super-slight; Beware two hours... Green Lantern bites!

Arf!
