Treklit characters in STXII?

F. King Daniel

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
This got me thinking:

In the last two years, [Bob] Orci has gone back and rewatched every episode of the original Star Trek, plus he read some Star Trek books he had missed.

STXI's George and Winona Kirk were based on characters from Treklit (Diane Carey's Best Destiny cited in interviews, although the characters predate that book). What Treklit characters would you like to see in STXII?

I'd love to see the various "below decks" Enterprise personnel invented by J.M. Dillard (Lamia, Stanger, Tomlinson) and Diane Duane (Harb Tanzer, Nahrat) pop up in little cameos or at least get namedropped (as Nurse Chapel was in STXI).

STXI's George and Winona Kirk were based on characters from Treklit (Diane Carey's Best Destiny cited in interviews, although the characters predate that book).

I think that's overstating the case. I mean, the screenwriters didn't have to read any novel to know that James T. Kirk had parents. All they did was use the names that Vonda N. McIntyre had coined for those parents in Enterprise: The First Adventure. (And for that matter, McIntyre just slapped a "Senior" onto the name of Kirk's brother, George Samuel Kirk, that was established in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?") So I don't think that really constitutes incorporating Trek Lit characters into the movie.

I think Orci is willing to read the books for inspiration, but I doubt he'd actually incorporate specific characters. For one thing, keep in mind that in the new timeline, Kirk has gained command of the Enterprise some seven years earlier than he did in the Prime timeline, so a lot of the novel characters you mention would probably be too young to be in Starfleet at the time of these movies (although admittedly that didn't stop them where Chekov was concerned). So don't get your hopes up.

I didn't say "incorporating", I said "based on". As in, "adapted". Look at it in the way comic book characters are adapted to movies, not in the Star Trek continuity porn way.

You're taking this waaaaaay to seriously.

^You're missing the point. Whichever words you use, the point is that the idea that Jim Kirk has parents is not a literary invention. Therefore, Kirk's parents are not incorporated from, based on, or adapted from Trek Lit. They're characters whose existence is implicit from the canonical fact that Jim Kirk and his brother exist. So the fact that they were shown in the movie does not suggest that any characters original to Trek Lit may show up in any form in future movies.

Wasn't Kirk's mother called "Winona" on the credits? And wasn't Kirk's brother renamed "Johnny" in STXI, breaking that thread of George Sr/Jr continuity? And didn't the writers cite Best Destiny as an inspiration in interviews?

Either way - play the damn game and pick a character you'd like to see in the next film, or don't.

Kirk's brother was not renamed. The hitchhiker was originally supposed to be him, then apparently became an unrelated person named Johnny (no longer the brother, since the Abramsverse split occurs AFTER Sam's birth).

Wow, this became oddly heated... hmm.

Anyway, to answer the OPs interesting hypothetical, after having read Unspoken Truth recently, I would be interested in seeing a young Saavik appearance, incorporating the Hellguard backstory.

Agreed Kertrats, this is an oddly heated debate. Anyway, I'd like a name drop to one of the Deckers. Either father or son.

okay here's one christine chapel was sopposed to be in movie but her sceanes were cut any Idea why? all so I would love to see dr. mbenga < correect the spelling I got wrong. he's was the african dr., who was a specialist on vulcan physioligy I believe. and how about kevin rylie.

Chapel was mentioned by name I believe by Bones and replied "Yes, Doctor." off screen.

I too like the idea of Saavik being introduced into new Trek. I get what King Daniel meant with Winona. I have mentioned this before in other threads...but I'd really like to see Robert April as a Starfleet Admiral. I suggested having William Shatner play him but no one went for that lol.

I'd also like to see Robert April in some fashion, as well as Commodore Decker (maybe as a Captain still). A mention of the Taurus Reach and a "station under construction" would be cool, unless this movie takes place in 2263 or later. If it did, then hearing a mention of Vanguard would be cool ;).

Maybe Tom Wilkinson for April...and maybe someone like Brad Pitt for Matt Decker? ...or maybe i should leave the casting to that other thread...

Never mind. If you haven't gotten my point by now, you never will.
I think it's you who hasn't gotten my point. I don't want a stupid debate over whether book X influenced movie Y this much or that much. That there's any influence at all --be it a tiny namedrop or fanwank explosion novel crossover extravaganza-- justifies what I said in the OP.

Since Commodore appears to be out as a rank it would probably be either Captain Decker or Admiral Decker if they use him.

Some people take the interwebz a slight to seriously.

As for the game, not sure to be honest, I've not read much of Classic Trek to answer I'm afraid.

I'd love to have Chapel in the next movie, that needs to happen!
How about an appearance or at least mention of Vanguard and it's cast.

I would find it infinitely cool if we were to see President Kenneth Wescott and the Palais de la Concorde in the next film. </former political science major>
