Bill Gates kids only to inherit $10 million each

Interesting. So he's not going to setup his children up to be rich for multiple lives.

I'd be especially curious to hear form parents on what they think of Bil's inheritance plans. The rest of his billions apparently will go to charities.

CNN
We encourage you to read about his fascinating interview with the Daily Mail -- it's a rare look into the psyche of one of the most interesting people in the world -- but if you'd like a condensed version, here are 10 key personal details and insights Gates revealed in the wide-ranging talk:
1. His kids like to tease him by singing the song "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars.
2. He's now given $28 billion to charity.
3. His three children, currently aged 15, 12 and nine, will reportedly inherit $10 million each (although Gates wouldn't disclose that amount in the interview), a slender sliver of his $56 billion net worth, because Gates says, "I don't think that amount of money would be good for them."
4. Did U2 star Bono invite Gates backstage when U2 was performing in Seattle? Not necessary, because Bono was staying at Bill's house that night.

I think it's a good idea, they'll have more than enough money- they can work, invent, donate some if they want, get any post secondary education. He's being generous but still taking care of them...

Bill Gates carries 10 million in his wallet.
 Likely you're right. I'm sure he carries an American Express Black card which only a handful of people have worldwide. It as I understand it has absolutely no limit at all. You could buy a 747 jumbo jet with an Amex black.

I think the (alleged) plan is excellent. His kids inherit as much as anyone could possibly need, a vast number of people benefit from the huge amount going to charities, and the kids get one more lesson on their parents' values.

I don't know about that! I'm sure I could easily spend $1 billion. There are various research and development projects I'd like to set up that would only be feasible if I had in the order of $1 billion to fund them.

Those projects could make the world a far better place than the piecemeal work that charities would do with that same money

True, about 10 years ago I saw an interview with Mr. Gates, when asked about how much cash he had in his wallet, he opened it and had $20.00 in it..which he later gave to a man who asked for some spare change..

He stated he usually used a credit card for minor purchases..

I disagree. I think he still understands the value of money and he has instilled this in his children too. Good for him and what lucky kids!

Despite the fact that Gates has earned a lot of disdain from people who work in the computer industry, I think it's inarguable that as a human being he's been generous with his fortune.

Yes, I agree. Gates understands the value of his money and what he's doing for his children [albeit they may not see it that way in their teens and twenties] will help them become successful.

edited to add: Steve Jobs would thank his lucky stars that Gates came in and helped save Apple in the 1990's with a huge infusion of cash when they were struggling.

I've always wondered how the children of very successful people feel trying to follow in the footsteps of their parents? I'd imagine the Obama children will have the same types of insecurities to live with regarding their father's legacy as the Gates children will.

'only 10 million'. Heh. They're also the kids of the one of the richest and most influential men on the planet who will have a stellar upbringing, education and life of privilege. Still, they wouldn't be the first people to inherit wealth, and Bill Gates is possibly the greatest philanthropist we'll ever see.

You realize of course, that he'll give that money in huge chunks to foundations (probably mostly his own), which are specifically designed and expertly staffed to evaluate proposals and strategically fund exactly that sort of thing. The Gate Foundation as it stands is one of the world's most important funders of everything from academic social science data gathering to basic science research to on-the-ground malaria eradication efforts in the developing world. I'm sure his kids, should they have interest, will be given plenty of opportunities to be involved in that process as well.

Now I feel old. I can remember back when he was still single and first got engaged to his wife Melinda. I had no idea they had three kids by now...

That's not the same as it being your own project. ie, something you can lead, and being very much involved in defining and shaping the project to realise your own vision.

Well I don't know exactly what they do, but strategically funded sounds like there isn't a vision, only "risk factors" and "bang for buck" considerations.
