The Officially Awesome Futurama Season 7 / Volume 6 Time!

So the new season of Futurama begins on June 23 and I have no clue what to call the season. Is it season 7? I think the writers call it that. The DVD will have Volume 6 on it so I'll call it that too.

The season finale is supposed to be Futurama in crazy other drawing styles like animee... should be interesting. We also get an episode where everyone changes gender!

So two more weeks and we will be having a happy summer. :)

Hmm, did they change voice actors?

I just saw an episode on ComedyCentral (Season 6, Episode 10, Airdate 08/19/2010) and they all sound different.

But will tune in for the season 7, maybe it just takes some getting used to

The production codes indicate that this will be the second half of season 6, and the renewal announcement from March called the two subsequent seasons 7A and 7B, so I bet the writers call this the back half of season 6 like everybody else. :)

All the original actors have returned, but they're a few years older. People's voices change as they age.

Or could it be that they sounded different in that episode because they were all being switched into different bodies? ;)

It's a combination of them being a decade older than when they started, and the character voices changing over time. The professor's voice has definitely changed since the early episodes. I remember that surprising me even when watching a season 4 episode vs season 3.

I can't wait for the new season (I think of it as season 6, since I don't count them cutting up the movies and calling it a season). One of the few shows I have at this time of the year.
Last season was alright overall. Even though it wasn't as strong as the first 4 seasons, I still thought it had some great episodes, and I'm glad it's back.

True dat. We had 13 episodes of S6, and these will be the second batch of 13 for S6.

Though after all the debate about Doctor Who series' #'s, you can't blame anyone for wondering.

Can't wait for this, DW will be off till "autumn", so at least there's one thing on TV worth watching.

I really didn't notice a difference in the voices, outside of maybe the professor.

I guess it makes sense that their voices change as they get older :p

hehe. Thanks for the answer!

Really? Of all the characters I thought Leela was the only one who sounded the most like she used to do. I thought Fry and Bender almost sounded like different actors!

I think the fact that Leela is basically Katey Segal's normal voice helps. As the other voices are mostly put on to some degree, they are more prone to changing over time as the voice actor develops the voice and becomes comfortable with it. Just like how Homer in S1 of the Simpsons sounds entirely different to even S3.

^That's part of it, but John DiMaggio's voice these days is developing more of a gravelly quality. Which isn't surprising, given that he's incredibly in demand as a voice artist these days, and that can put some wear and tear on the equipment. Billy West is also very prolific, so the same applies there.

I haven't noticed any big issues with the voices. As long as the show is funny and they have the real cast doing their thing I'm happy.

It's been 12 years nearly since the show started. Sure, it hasnt been on all that time (to my lament) but of course there is a slight difference in their voices because they're all 12 years older.

Okay, can we review here...?

I didn't care for "Neutopia." I don't like it when they do these "battle of the sexes" episodes, a show set in the future giving its characters gender attitudes that feel like a relic of the 1960s and hardly seem relevant to a 21st-century audience. And stereotype humor in general is lazy and obvious. Ooh, men don't ask for directions! Women like to shop! This is the level of material of an inept standup comic on open mike night. And the Star Trek rock creature parody would've worked better if the rock creature had sounded more imposing and Yarnek-like and less like Generic David Herman Voice Guy. There were a few funny moments, but not enough.

"Benderama" was better, though. It's always cool when they do geeky math/science humor. (I like it that both Amy and Hermes understood the Professor's equation.) And the jokes in general were better. Although it went a little too far at the end, with the way the space giant was dealt with. He really didn't deserve that.

Generally agree. Neutopia felt like something they'd done before, too, and better--can't put my finger on when.

Neutopia finally got going in the last five or six minutes. It would've been a lot better if the gender switch had been the whole episode. They might've misfired on that, too, but at least that has some traction.

The Borax Kid was pretty cool. "Goofus and Ganja" and "look it up!" were both good lines.

Benderama was rather good for a Bender-centered episode. Those tend to be the lesser lights of Futurama, as far I'm concerned, insofar as Bender is good in moderation, and is unpleasant in large amounts, which is why it's ironic that the largest amount of Bender ever turned out okay.

That's what I was thinking and the mis-leading preview made it seem that's what the episode was about, instead we got a typical "battle of the sexes" trope instead.

A gender switching episode would of been more fun, especially if they played up the Leela/Fry relationship with it,by having them have a better one with the switched sexes which of course falls apart once they switch back.
