TrekBBS Facebook Chat

^ I have sent friend requests to BBS folks in the past that had no idea who I was. (I have my privacy settings set really high.) So these days, when sending a FB request to someone, I include my username here in a note with the request. It makes things easier for the recipient to decide if they want to add me into their collective or not.

(And I sent several the other day without adding a note. Since we were all on chat together I thought you kids would figure it out... and then a couple of you opted out of the group. They probably have no idea who or what sent them a request.)

I think it's only polite to indicate who you are when trying to befriend someone on FB, especially if it's not obvious based on your real name/username.

Also, I apologize to anybody who was added to the group without their consent initially! This is a bizarre function of the new group format that I hope they scale back; I was unaware of this, as the previous format sent join requests. The group has been locked down and changed to "closed" for privacy concerns-- so if you would like to join, please use the request button at the top of the group!

Look forward to seeing you in the chat! :)

Agreed. But, I've also inadvertently discovered an interesting FB phenomenon that can also assist. When I get a friend request without a note, I go to the person's Info page and scroll down to their FB ID. It's been amusing to see how many of us use our TBBS ID as our FB ID.

^ There are some folks who are not aware you can actually do that though.

Also agreed.

Yeah, I did the same thing. I thought I was merely sending a few people "suggestions" to join the group, when I was actually involuntarily adding them to the group. I sent them all notes, though, once I realized it. That IS a rather annoying feature.

I'm really enjoying it. Interestingly, a lot of the same people from the old TrekIRC chat have become regulars again-- with some new faces!

I just got involved in the whole Trekbbs group and am really enjoying it so far. It's awesome to get to know more about you guys, especially just real name instead of username. I'm alright being open (And it might make me confortable in terms of maybe meeting up) but still keeping real/online life separate but equal.

Some people have been asking about privacy issues on Facebook and what's ok and what isn't. When I was deciding this on Monday if I wanted to join this group, I actually found two great articles on how to maybe compromise. I couldn't find one of them (Might continue to look) but this one is really great in terms of how to use Friend Lists:

10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know9

Learn the List feature and be one with the list feature. Doing this goes a long way in terms of what you want friends on facebook to see, and it's not just board stuff, but anything.

Great link. I actually use all of those things and have several different groups for privacy and regional/workplace organization. Very, very few people can actually see tagged pictures of me! Worth checking out.

Well, I checked in to the privacy stuff and it's limited to groups; nothing you can do with lists after they're created though there are people lobbying Facebook to change it (I'd settle for an easier way to view and unlike pages myself).

I made one group for my family just to see when they popped up in chat, but that's it. So now I basically need to replace lists with groups - you'd think one or the other would suffice!

I'm not sure I like the Facebook chats in general. Not just this one, I mean all of them. Maybe it's because I'm not used to them.
