Oops, looks like the X-Men reboot is a bit of a flopooroonie. :rommie:

Guess they'll have to reboot the sucker again. One of these days, they might cast an actor as Prof X who I can actually buy in the role.

I chalk that up to the little marketing that existed until the final couple weeks leading up to the premier. It's getting good reviews so maybe it will pick up steam via word of mouth. Although I don't see any one movie dominating the box office week in and week out this summer. Alot of heavy hitters. I still
think this will be the best of the superhero movie lineup. Gonna watch it it t-minus 2 hours!

I agree with you except for Harry Potter. That will be in a class of its own.

At this point. I have no interest in anything X-Men that's not First Class. Finish this out and then we can talk about the future.

SO it may have underperformed for the opening weekend, however the final takings is what matters. I suspect that it'll get in $300-$400m worldwide gross.

Agreed. Now if it were a bad movie and it didn't gross a lot opening weekend, I'd say that there is little hope for success. But word of mouth will fuel this. I can't think of any off the top of my head (unfortunately), but there are countless top grossers that were quiet their first weekend and grew to be a top grosser. The commonality between them is that they were all critically acclaimed.

^Hmm District 9 perhaps?

I think it will do ok this week and will probably place second next to Super 8 next weekend. Another movie with a modest marketing push.

And yeah HP, it being the final installment will probably do gangbusters at the B.O. But will it really be enough to get consecutive #1 placement each week?

@Temis...it astonishes me how you can continue to post and make comments about something you've clearly no desire to see. Assuming Fox needs to reboot the franchise because of a relatively slow opening day intake is a great example of a knee jerk reaction. What do you care if you're not even bothering to see it? As I stated in the other thread, I'm sure you've seen others reactions about the movie in the review thread. They're mostly overwhelmingly positive. As also mentioned here it matters about overall box office performance not just opening weekend.

I want X4 to deal with the Morlock Massacre. It's a great opportunity to give some of the current characters a decent exit

So you want to follow up a movie that removed a good chunk of the main team and replaced them, with a movie that removes a good chunk of the main team and replaces them:wtf:

Especially since the films only been out ONE DAY.

Can I cheat and say that I want to see an X-Men 3 that properly addresses the Phoenix saga and retcons out The Last Stand?

First Class 2. They can always ignore the first three movies if they want to and just re-introduce some other familiar characters. X4 would probably need to ignore X3 and pick up ten years or so after X2 - Highly unlikely and probably not a good move.

I'm sorry, X-Men without Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Gray, Storm, hell even Rogue, or Kitty, throw in Nightcrawler or Beast... without them just doesn't interest me. Basically, classic Claremont era IS X-Men to me. Everyone else is just a muddled soup of funny names and colorful "energy swaths" on the comic page.

I will see First Class because I have faith that Vaughan can make an entertaining film, and that it focuses on Xavier and Magneto, who still interest me as characters, but the actual mutant lineup looks dull as dirt.

To me, there's a core group of X-Men that resonate with me, which are basically, the Claremont/Byrne era of X-Men... and movies without them are not compelling. This movie looks like it's for "comic fans only".

Man, X-Men 3 just screwed over the entire franchise six ways from sunday.

I'm one of the few around who can honestly say he liked Last Stand, and keep a straight face.

On the other hand if Bryan Singer wanted to complete his story the way he originally envisioned it...

I would be highly interested in seeing that movie.

There is nothing the moviegoing public would like to see more than the X-Men fight the Shi'ar on the moon.

It all comes back to fights on the moon.

It would gross one billion dollars.

I want X4 to deal with the Morlock Massacre. It's a great opportunity to give some of the current characters a decent exit (Angel, Shadowcat, Colossus, & Nightcrawler were all severely injured in the comics) and bring in some new blood in a natural way (Psylocke, Havoc, and Dazzler came along as replacements). I'd even be keen to see a prim, British Psylocke taking on Sabretooth at the end of X4 just like in the comics, which allows Wolverine to get his obligatory showdown and opens up possibilities for X5. The Marauders are half decent villains and Mr Sinister's agenda allows for Cyclops (who we never see die) and Jean Grey to return in X5 or X6.

If X4 is supposed to follow in the same continuity as X1, X2, and X3, then Psylocke is already dead, and Sabretooth seems intended to have been killed as well ( though admittedly in what could be considered a less-than-definitive way for a comic book character ). Also, I know she returned from death in the comics, but Jean Grey should stay dead in the film continuity IMO.

Sinister often had to clone the Marauders (Arclight was zapped during Last Stand too). The inclusion of cloned villains that have already died is meant to give a clue to his motivation. We saw an asian woman called Psylocke die in X3, hence I specified the British version of Betsy. She's basically just a replacement telepath but her pshycho-blast was a bit of bloodthirsty fun and her one-on-one fight with Sabretooth showed how tough she was mentally because she had no chance of beating him physically.

I have no problem with Jean being resurrected (she is the Phoenix after all) although I think she is a peripheral character now that they screwed up her best plotline). Her purpose now is to be the mother of Cable and I just think that plot works better if both she and Scott are alive and in Sinister's clutches.

The X-men who were injured by the Marauders did get to spend some time convalescing on Muir Island so you have a B-plot for the existing characters. Rogue needs to bounce back with Ms Marvel type powers so they can do the two personality plot and give her some real action.

Has anyone ever sat down and thought about how damn weird a character Betsy Braddock is? British telepath who got magical yellowface and switched bodies with a ninja and stopped wearing clothes? Really?

You forgot the bionic eyes, the fact that she is only half human, and the fact that she is an upper-middle class blonde who dyes her hair lilac.

And twin sister of the mystical defender of the multiverse!

Now that's a movie. You've just got to figure out some way for the climax to take place on the moon.

(But maybe drop "Lady Mandarin." What the hell kind of name is that for a Japanese ninja? Even if it were ethnically correct, it'd still be like a superhero named "Mister Bureaucrat.")
