Who should take over the Sarah Jane Adventures?

Since the BBC has cancelled the show (the 6 episodes that were filmed will air later this year), the question is a bit moot, but had it continued my assumption was they'd have brought Jo Grant back since she'd been reintroduced in Season 4.

So at this point I think the question becomes "What would be a good idea for a new spin off to replace SJA?"

I like the idea of a former companions or guests stars being cast in a new show. And I like the idea of Ace and/or Clyde & Rani returning. It's just a matter of putting together a new premise that doesn't just feel like a rehash of SJA.

Otherwise I like the idea of Clyde and Rani guest staring on DW as a way of wrapping up any loose ends from SJA. They did something similar on the X-Files when they devoted an episode to wrapping up Millennium and one to the Lone Gunmen spin off.

This is the best idea I think.

If Rory and Amy are leaving at the end of the season, I suppose it's too much to hope Clyde and Rani could replace them...

It would be sad if the series died with Elizabeth Sladen. Which other former companion could take over?

My personal choice would be Sophie Aldred as Ace, she's young enough to do it, would certainly be up for it and I must confess had a huge lesbo crush on her back in 1988.

Any other ideas?

The best choice to replace Sarah Jane Smith? Mickey Smith.

Mr. Smith the computer contacts him after Sarah passes, recalling something she said once "We Smiths need to stick together."

Hello saturn5 & all: my vote would be to retire the series out of respect to Liz Sladen. Really, it was her show, imho. Best regards, Madelow.

It'd be interesting that's for sure, although it would need another companion love affair (face it Clyde at least has a thing for Rani)

I'm with Madelow. I'd just as soon see them retire the show. But seeing Clyde and Rani again on Who would be an epic win.

Beside, the BBC needs time to start working on a new show about a Victorian reptile crimefighter and her female sidekick. ;)

No, I've got a better idea;

And with that context, I'd say definitely Clyde and Rani could carry a show on their own. They could perhaps set it a few years in the future - to allow the 20-something actors to actually play 20-somethings. The actors themselves are talented enough that I'm sure we'll see them getting work elsewhere soon (and odds are they were likely "in the loop" regarding Sladen so it's not as if they were caught by total surprise). It would be great to see them share an adventure with the Eleventh Doctor - maybe that's the germ for the next Christmas special? - but whether they'd fit into what Moffat is doing right now is another question.

I'm going to be interested to see how the season finale for SJA Series 5 turns out. RTD has stated he knew about Sladen's condition, so that says to me he made sure to get the season premiere and finale stories done. So episode 2 of the final story could give us a sign as to whether a future Clyde/Rani/Luke spinoff would even be possible.

One encouraging thing - even though SJA is cancelled, CBBC is still adding new material to the website. If they see a demand for something related to SJA to continue, who knows what might happen?
