Anti British and Anti French views

No they waver from side to side on both sides of la Manche.

de Gaulle is interesting though. He never forgave the UK for rescuing France. He was perfectly happy with the Americans doing it and the Germans were totally forgiven for their bad manners but all his long life he could never get over the bitterness of that assistance from Britain. You could say he found it gaulling (I crack myself up sometimes). He got away with blocking the UK from joining the EC for so long because he was so powerful and because the anti-British sentiment was not beating in his heart alone, shall we say.

It gaulled him, eh? Nice. :bolian:

Well, if this thread taught me anything, is that people love me. You are too many to mention, but I just wanted to thank you guys. I'm not sure I deserve such nice words, but... Oh, who am I fooling? I totally deserve it, but thanks nonetheless. :D

You're not in the postion to call anybody stupid after I read your posts, wrong, maybe, but not stupid.
You ignorence of Europe and America and has robbed you of any valid opion regarding America and the UK.
Lulz.

iguana's also got the mind of a fucking scientist.
I'll leave it someone else to complete the quote.

Can I jump in here and say Iguana is cute too.
We don't know if he has nice legs and if he looks good in a fireman's uniform.
Hey he's an astrophysicist. He can't have everything.
Well, only one way to be sure, innit? ;)

I eagerly await pics of you in a fireman's uniform, iguana. :D

This post was brought to you by Creeps International - we believe in equality in creepyness.

I thought maybe he had an idea for an awesome X-Men/Stargate crossover.

I think I saw that once. It wasn't very good, Carter just went on at great length about restricting the power of kings, then she used her new magnetic powers to destroy some Replicators. There were hardly any explosions. :(

UK - Think they are a great country. Love the Queen.
France - The only good thing about them is the French Foreign Legion.

Trekbbs - Home of stupid.
See, this is what I meant when I said that Americans are assholes. It must be pent-up aggression from the lack of boobs or swear words on television.

Well, as topic starter, I feel I must say something;

...remold the diplomatic framework of our community!

The winning nation shall, as a French knight of my acquaintance put it, taunt the loser a second time!
This post for me justified this thread,
Okay, I'll start a thread based about eating my own dead mother and vomitting her half-digested remains into a grave. We'll see if that thread goes any better than this one.

...but the only boobs and swear words I see on TV are from American shows. I think I'm about to be sucked into some kind of paradox.
Yeah, but we get those shows on public television. :techman: Americans have to pay for cable to get proper boobage. I mean, they show The Wire and Oz on a channel that's intended for Irish-speaking rural backwater folk (as they are described in TG4's remit).

Do you have an alternative hypothesis for why Americans are assholes?

I know the stupid title of this stupid topic is basically asking for it, but cut the shit.

Not helping. :p

TG4 has changed a lot from the days when I was semi-obligated to watch it for the purposes of schooling, clearly. Or maybe it's just because I was watching those Irish-made cartoons where characters spoke in Irish.

It's too much to hope there's an Irish dub of the Wire, because that'd be pretty hilarious.

I once mentioned something about Truth, Justice & The American Way to a lady from Scotland and she laughed hysterically at The American Way part. :(

And you're surprised?

Truth and Justice aren't exactly new concepts and America doesn't monopolise it either.

So know wonder she laughed, I'd laugh and have laughed at stuff like that before.

France is a Catholic country, so is Ireland (and many around the world.) - France is a republic, so is Ireland. - I'm thinking, the Pope is like the Queen in the Catholic faith.
No, we're both secular republics with Catholic majorities. And to most people under the age of 60, the Pope is like a weird uncle that says crazy things every now and again and once had an infamous incident with a nephew where there wasn't enough evidence to press charges.

 I'd often suspected that, but didn't know.

Around this time five year ago, I was in England when some teenagers threatened me because they thought I was Polish. That was a funny evening.
Wow, you met Tacky?! :guffaw:

I'm not sure I subscribe to your theory, GodBen. After all, we have nudity and swear words on normal TV and yet, we're assholes. :(

Well, Americans like their pathos but most Europeans would say such things only in an ironic fashion so she probably assumed you didn't mean it seriously.

Perhaps my fellow Europeans can help clarify if I'm right or wrong but mainland Europe is more to the left on the political spectrum whilst the UK leans more to the right.

Hmm, interesting. I've been doing some research on a few historical matters, and one thing you have to keep in mind is, besides the fascist powers of WW2, that Spain's totalitarian Govt lasted until the 70s, and Greece and, iirc, Portugal, had their military juntas in place for a while in the 60s (Wikipedia can tell you more). There are a lot of hard-eyed old men in these countries who hanker for the old ways, when they could string up a few people they don't like and really take care of those gays and poets and liberals and anyone else who doesn't think like they do. The past is a lot, lot closer than we think.

Greece's and Portugal's military dictatorships lasted until the mid-70s. All three countries were admitted to the EU in the 80s and all three are pretty left-leaning, as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I suspected leaft leaning but wasn't sure. But would it be fair to say that some of the older people hanker for the good ol' days? One certainly gets that impression of Russia.

Mmh, there always some people who support stuff like that or are perhaps sentimental, no matter where.
The only country I can comment on with any real knowledge and personal experience is Greece. The regime of the Colonels is very unpopular there and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who supports it, due to their atrocities. This regime was also backed by the USA which explains the widespread and common America skepticism. The impression I (and a lot of others) have is that left-leaning positions are more mainstream than in other countries, like Germany.

The situation in Spain is a bit more complicated, I think, because the Franco era wasn't really dealt with because at first it was thought to be too divisive. There were some attempts in the last decade now that the issue isn't as controversial anymore. While in some regions, e.g. Catalunya, there's still a lot of bitterness about the Franco regime (and rightfully so) I suppose there's also a sizeable chunk of the population who think differently. It's hard to tell, especially because I've only ever interacted with young Spaniards in any meaningful way.

In any case, it's definetely not as widespread as in Russia by a long shot.
