It should be noted however that the previous Labour Government back in 97 made a move from the left of the political spectrum moretowards the centre i.e. a move to the right. of course in both the 97 and 10 election the electorate were sick of them and wanted them gone.
You can sort of tell how a country in general leans by looking at which party that holds office the most leans. true every now and then a party is elected to office that leans in a different direction.
The UK won't be alone with more extremist parties but as thr bulk of the ones in the UK are anti EU that does tend to indicate a disconnect between the electorate and those in office. The EU needs to do a better job of selling its positives to the citizens of the EU as I said earlier in recent times when the people have been asked to vote they vote no and thats not in the UK as the UK electorate hasn:t had a vote on recent EU legislation. But the EU could swallow whole threads in itself.

Funnily enough, this was a general trend among Social Democrats in Europe at the time, though I'm not sure where it started.
Back in the day, there was even a manifesto about the whole neoliberalism/New Labour thing written by Tony Blair, Gerhard Schröder and another European Social Democrat I can't recall right now.
I also remember that after the 1997 election, the German Social Democrats put up some placards that said, "Congratulations, Tony! In xyz days (it was the number of days till the next general election in 98) we will do the same." And they did. It's a nice example of those pan-European trends I talked about earlier.
Yeah - although I think that there are a number of countries where that's difficult or even impossible - but "mainland Europe" isn't a country. So, how would you measure its political leanings? Rate that of the individual countries and then calculate an average? Or count left and right countries and whatever political direction has more countries to its name, wins?
It just seems very odd to me to think of such a vast and diverse area as homogenuous. Some countries are more left leaning than the UK (e.g. Greece), others more right leaning, others pretty much the same. Some countries even lack the statistical basis in my opinion because they haven't been democracies for very long.

This post for me justified this thread, what you said about the diplomatic framework of this community; This right there opened the doors it seemed, for a mutual Anglo Franco dicussion where all was fair; How ever, the first sign I see of anybody ganging up on Shaytal because, she's like the only French poster here 'that I've noticed...' I'd ask for the thread to be closed, but hey, it's 2011, I say it's about time we look stuff square in the eye, and have fun... My patriotism is UK love, not French hate.
