Quirks in your likes/dislikes?

I was disappointed went watching Voyager's first few episodes that Neelix and Kes were not sharing quarters, nor apparently having sex.

Also that the series never made clear exactly how they first met, and managed to initially interact.

Well, when you make it a point that the character is only two years old... the 'ewww' factor would've been pretty high.

Are we going broad or specific with these quirky likes/dislikes? Here's a quirky dislike of mine in TNG-era Trek:

"Hail the other vessel"

(half-second later)

"No reply"

Hey, hows about giving them a chance to pick up the phone? It's like calling someone up and hanging up after the first half-ring and saying they're not answering.

I was thinking "quirky" in the sense of "compared to the majority opinion." If there is one.

I think this is minority:

I really don't like Data.

I really like Kes.

I don't like either "City on the Edge of Forever" or "The Inner Light", but both episodes are widely loved by Star Trek fans for reasons that elude me.

On the other Hand, I love "The Alternative Factor" and most fans consider it garbage, again, for reasons that elude me.

I wish they had added Rain Robinson to the crew of VOYAGER, as was apparently considered. That could have perked things up a bit.

I had forgotten that quirk of mine. I loved her too and wished she had been added to the cast.

Another love of mine is DS9's "Babel", another episode most fans seem to dislike.

I don't like how far they ran with Jadzia's Klingophilia, and thought she was more interesting as the mysterious "old man" in earlier seasons.

I don't like how they made Kira cry every other episode early on because some fans thought she was too abrasive.

I never really warmed to Seven despite liking a lot of her stuff.

I don't get the hate for "It's only a game." ...These are a-l-i-e-n-s. They're bound to be different. Shame that more of them weren't more so, and on fans for taking things so seriously.

The Ferengi lost half of whatever potential they reacquired on DS9 by series' end.

The tension in darker episodes like "Yesterday's Enterprise" wouldn't be nearly as high if it weren't for the stakes set in the brighter ones.

The impact of TNG's later seasons wouldn't have been as great without the naively conceited earlier seasons. Without which there may have been no other Trek series.

Star Trek made sci-fi popular again. I wonder if more mainstream shows like Lost would have been made or received as they had without it.

DINGDINGDINGDINGDING!

We have a winner!

Exactly how I feel.

What's even more hilarious is how in "If Wishes Were Horses," it's as though we get to see the earlier Jadzia contrasted against her Klingon Party Girl caricature (though in this case she's mooning after Bashir), and boy, it sucks.

Personally, I think Curzon took her over. No wonder Ezri was so freaked out about the possibility of it happening to her!

Ah, we have another one. I LIKE that episode, while most of the rest of you don't seem to.

But Jadzia had no discernible personality at all the first season. I remember strugging with her character because I couldn't figure her out at all.

My editor actually had to force Betancourt and I to go back and add more Dax scenes because we had basically thrown up our hands and used her as little as possible!

She was much more fun and interesting later on.

But it backfired because the writing for 7 of 9's character was some of the best in the series and boobs had nothing to do with it.
I agree. I know a lot of Kes/Jennifer Lien fans were unhappy, but the fact is, seemed to get how to "exploit" her character/species except to give her powers and weird characteristics (like having to engage in sex for hours to conceive). And the fact that nothing was done to show that she was aging during the three years she was on the show didn't help. She was two years old when she joined the crew and despite having reached "middle-age" in the third season, she didn't look any older than she did the day she joined the crew.

I think writing for a character who was assimilated into the Borg as a child provided more compelling fodder for story telling.

I must have a screening of that episode with you so that you can explain the plot to me. It's never made any sense to me whenever I've watched it.

Robin Curtis is, by far and away, the best Saavik.

TOS is my least favorite Trek series.

I love ENT: Precious Cargo.

I astronomically prefer Ezri to Jadzia.

"Inner Light" was quite dull. "City on the Edge of Forever" is good, but horribly over-rated.

Agreed that Jadzia's Klingon-groupie stuff was lame.

Also, they should never have brought Worf onto DS9. All his interesting stuff was done on TNG.

Not for Ocampa, no.

She may have been easier to write for after being established and given specific interests, but the character lost her mystique - as Leonard Nimoy said of Spock when he regretting having Spock smile in one scene.

More than that, the character became too much a sorority girl for my taste. Also, I get what they were trying to do with her having many and diverse interests but I thought she became very one-note.

I would counter that, the more Worf was around other Klingons, the more unique he became. In terms of character development, you could really see that he moved around psychologically a lot over a fairly short period of time. It was interesting that ultimately Worf didn't truly fit anywhere. I felt in the end that he was a lonely character.

Dating a Ocampa brings a new meaning to "Speed Dating"
The Ocampa, Klingons and Jem'Hadar with their rapid maturity, is one of my "likes." The less Human the aliens on Star Trek are (not talking about appearance here) the better I liked it. I disliked the occasional message of " well, we're really all the same inside."

:)

This. One reason I liked the Binars, Tosk and grumpy old Odo and find the Bajorans pretty dull.

Was Jeri Ryan smart casting or just luck? Could have gone sooo badly wrong with different actor. Writing was important, but I think it's Ryan who makes Seven work.

Also agree, though the fact that the Ocampa have one kid, and only breed once is not a good plan for long term species survival. On the bright side, one could have fun doing eugentics on the Ocamapa. (yes I am a evil git)

Also, I always thought they should of boosted Dr. Selar to be the doctor on Season 3 onwards of TNG...
